Narrative Exposure Therapy for Adults With Intellectual Disability
PTSDTrauma1 moreThe purpose of the study is to identify how Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) can be adapted for delivery with adults with mild Intellectual Disability (ID) and to explore whether NET can reduce symptoms of traumatic stress in this population. The first phase of the research involves working with a speech and language therapist to make adaptations to the therapy and research materials for adults with mild ID. This work will then be triangulated by gaining feedback from a service user focus group on the accessibility of materials for adults with mild ID. The second phase of the research consists of a 'sequential measurement single case studies series' to explore the effectiveness of Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) in reducing symptoms of PTSD or prominent symptoms. Questionnaires will be completed before, during and after the therapy by both the adult with ID and a carer if possible and consenting. Electrodermal activity of participants will be measured throughout sessions (using an unobtrusive device) as an indicator of physiological arousal. All measures will be visually analysed using established criteria and statistical methods where possible. The impact of NET on a person's memory of events in their life will be explored by examining how coherent participants' accounts of traumatic experiences are before and after NET using coding systems developed by previous studies. An interview will take place approximately six weeks after therapy with the participant by an independent researcher. This will aim to collect qualitative data about the participants' experiences of NET and will be analysed using content analysis. Participants will be recruited primarily from Intellectual Disability services in Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. This will be extended to Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust if necessary (Secondary care). The investigators intend to recruit six participants and six carers to the study.
Characterization of Nociception Phenotype in Individuals With Intellectual Disability
Intellectual DisabilityBackground: People with intellectual disability (ID) often have physical disabilities as well. These physical problems can affect their bones, muscles, nerves, and gastrointestinal tracts. All of these issues can also cause pain. Yet little research has been done on pain in people with ID. Objective: To compare brain responses to unpleasant stimuli in people with and without ID. Eligibility: People aged 8 to 30 years diagnosed with an ID. Healthy volunteers without an ID are also needed. Design: The study requires only 1 visit of up to 4 hours. Participants with ID may come for up to 5 shorter visits instead. Participants will take a test to measure their level of ID. They will have a physical exam. Both groups will answer questions about pain and how their bodies react to it. They will answer questions about how they respond to things they see, feel, hear, smell, and taste. They will answer questions about their social behaviors. Caregivers may answer questions if the participant cannot. Both groups will have a test to measure their brain activity. Participants will wear a special cap, like a swim cap, with sensors and wires. Sensors to examine the heart will be placed on the skin of their chest with stickers. An elastic band will be placed around the middle of their body to measure how fast they are breathing. Sensors to measure sweat will be placed on two fingers. Participants will have heat, cold, brushing, and mild electrical stimuli to different parts of their body. Participants will rank how each stimulus feels using a scale with numbers or a scale with faces.
Oral Health Promotion Among Preschool Children With Special Needs
Intellectual DisabilityCerebral Palsy7 moreEstablishing good oral health-related habit is challenging among younger children, especially for preschool children with special needs, as they have physical, mental, sensory, behavioural, emotional, and chronic medical conditions that requires health care beyond the routines. Existing evidences showed that children with special needs have poorer oral health status and more challenging behaviours than their counterparts in main stream schools. Visual pedagogy, such as social stories, have been applied to teach a variety of skills or behaviours to individuals with special needs. They are short stories demonstrating the target skill or behaviour, and then the readers are expected to perform the target skill or behaviour following the demonstrations. Giving the evidence that children with special needs can understand complex situations and learn new practices by using those stories, we expect to apply a package of structured social stories to modify oral health-related behaviours (tooth brushing, healthy eating, dental visit), and thereby, improve oral health status among preschool children with special needs. Establishment of good oral-health related behaviours in early childhood will benefits children in their future life. Additionally, visual pedagogy-assisted oral health education is relatively easy and safe to implement. If proven effective, social story-based preventive care can be recommended to special children globally.
A Cross-sectional Study to Evaluate Speech and Language Development in Chinese Children Aged 2-6...
Mental RetardationAutism Spectrum Disorder1 moreThe purpose of this study is to establish a new Chinese children's speech and language norm by obtaining the latest data of speech and language development of children aged 2 ~ 6 from different regions in China. At the same time, the overall development level and group differences of speech and language in Chinese children aged 2 to 6 years, and the influencing factors of speech and language development in Chinese children aged 2 to 6 years were also discussed.
Stem Cell Therapy in Mental Retardation
Mental RetardationThe purpose of this study was to analyze the benefit of autologous mononuclear cell therapy in mental retardation.
Psychomotor Therapy Effects in Adaptive Behavior and Motor Proficiency in Intellectual Disability...
Intellectual DisabilityPeople with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) usually present limitations at adaptive behavior and motor skills, which lead to limitations/barriers in the daily independent functioning of this population. The main goal of this research is to analyze the efficacy of a Psychomotor Intervention Program on adults with and without IDD, through an assessment of their progress both in adaptive behavior competences and motor proficiency skills.
Research Engagement With People With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
Intellectual DisabilityDevelopmental Disability2 moreThe objectives of this project are to to build sustainable regional communities of Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities (IDD) stakeholders to provide ongoing input to research priorities, methodological processes, and relevant person-centered health outcomes; leverage existing Special Olympic infrastructure to nationally disseminate the toolkit in order to increase participation and engagement in research and improve health outcomes; conduct comparative effectiveness trials that incorporate people with IDD focusing on their research priorities.
The Effects of Therapeutic Recreation Activities on Aberrant Behaviours of Individuals With Intellectual...
Therapeutic RecreationIntellectual Disability2 moreThe aim of this study was to determine the effect of Therapeutic Recreation Activities on Aberrant Behavior of Adolescents With Intellectual Disabilities. The research was carried out at Meram Melike Hatun Special Education Vocational School in Konya. The study took place between May 2019 and June 2019. The parents of the participants who participated in the study consisted of the experimental group (n = 16) and the remaining parents (n = 16) formed the control group and the sample group (n = 32). The personal information form which measures demographic characteristics developed by the researchers according to the literature, and The Aberrant Behavior Checklist Scale were used. Data were analyzed in SPSS statistics 23 program. According to Shapiro Wilk test, sample group was not normal. For this reason, non-parametric tests were performed. In descriptive data, the mean, number, percentage will be used; Comparative statistics were made according to the assumptions of non-parametric test (Wilcoxon test, Mann Whitney U test). Therapeutic Recreation Activities was applied as total of 16 sessions, consisting of two sessions per week and each session lasting about 1 hour. The program was implemented by researcher.
