Does Icodextrin Reduce the Risk of Small Bowel Obstruction?

Surgical Adhesions

The study aims at investigating if icodextrin 4% instilled in abdominal cavity during surgery can reduce the risk of surgery and hospitalisation for small bowel obstruction in patients with colorectal cancer. Follow-up data is collected from the Swedish national colorectal cancer registry.Patients are followed for 5 years postoperatively. The study is a randomized Swedish multicenter study and planned to include 1,800 patients. A safety control is planned after 300 included patients.

Point of Care Ultrasound for Suspected Small Bowel Obstruction in the Emergency Department

Small Bowel Obstruction

The primary purpose of this study is to determine the accuracy of ultrasound in diagnosing small bowel obstruction in emergency department patients, as compared to the criterion standards of computed tomography, operative reports, or discharge diagnosis. The secondary purposes of the study include evaluation of the effect of ultrasound for small bowel obstruction on the patient length of stay in the emergency department and the diagnostic utility of specific ultrasound findings in the diagnosis of small bowel obstruction. The study will also examine the inter-rater agreement between point-of-care sonographers' interpretation and blinded reviewers' interpretation of the ultrasound images.

Comparison Between Two Concentration of Hypertonic Saline in Intestinal Obstruction Surgery

Intestinal Obstruction Fluid Management With Hypertonic Saline

Background and Rationale : Perioperative fluid management is a challenging issue in surgical care especially in a procedure specific model. Recently hypertonic saline (HS) has the advantage of using the patient's own total body water by drawing interstitial space. Although it still controversial whether HS is associated with benefits in specific patient populations, particularly with respect to site of lesion and illness severity; these data provide insight into therapeutic modalities to curtail ileus formation. Objectives : Measurement of total volume of fluid infused, the need of inotropic or vasopressor to maintain adequate hemodynamic parameters with assessment of electrolyte disturbances and S.lactate The incidence rate of surgical complications; infection and anastomotic dehiscence Study population & Sample size : There were no previous trials comparing the two studied groups of the current trial. We expected a small standardized effect size of 0.2. Based on this effect size, 25 subjects will be needed to elicit the difference between the two groups at an alpha level of 0.05 and power of 0.9 (Whitehead et al; 2016).
