A Danish Audit of Small Bowel Obstruction

Bowel Obstruction Small

Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a common and potentially life-threatening acute surgical condition. A minority of patients present with a clear indication for urgent surgical intervention, either on the basis of clinical or radiological assessment (clinical signs of peritonitis/sepsis; suspicion of bowel ischaemia; closed loop obstructions; irreducible herniae etc.). However, the optimal management of the remaining patients, the majority of whom present with SBO caused by abdominal adhesions, remains a topic of international debate with practice varying in different healthcare systems. This multicentre, prospective, observational study aims to describe the current management of patients admitted with SBO in 6 acute hospitals (Bispebjerg, Herlev, Hillerød, Hvidovre, Køge, Slagelse) on the island of Sjælland, Denmark, which accounts for a 1/3 of the total Danish population.

Acute High-risk Abdominal Surgery Study - an Optimized Perioperative Course

Perforated ViscusIntestinal Obstruction

The objective of this study is to implement an optimized perioperative course for patients undergoing acute high-risk abdominal surgery in order to improve the outcome. The optimized perioperative course consists of a number of interventions carried out before, during and after surgery.

Clinical Impacts of Oral Gastrografin Follow Through in Adhesive Small Bowel Obstruction (SBO)

Small Bowel Obstruction

Mini abstract : Altogether 100 patients with 117 episodes of ASBO were randomized into control and gastrografin groups. Eight episodes in eight patients were excluded. Gastrografin group showed a significant decrease of both the time between admission and operation and that of hospital stay .The need for surgery was reduced but statistically insignificant.

A Health Economic Trial in Adult Patients Undergoing Open Colectomy MA402S23B301

Bowel Obstruction

This study is designed to compare the standard of care against EXPAREL (bupivacaine liposome extended-release injectable suspension) to determine if total opioid consumption is reduced when using EXPAREL therefore possibly reducing total hospitalization costs.

SurgiWrapTM to Reduce Soft Tissue Attachment & Incidence Early Post-Operative Bowel Obstruction...

AdhesionsColectomy

The purpose of this study is to determine if the use of SurgiWrapTM: (1) prevents/lowers the incidence of Grade 2 or higher soft tissue attachments under the incision made during abdominal surgery, (2) reduces post-operative bowel obstruction.

Antibiotic Prophylaxis in the Prevention of Surgical Site Infections After Selected Urgent Abdominal...

Acute AppendicitisPerforated Gastroduodenal Ulcer1 more

Aim of prospective randomized a placebo controlled study is to prove that in case of acute surgical procedure due to appendicitis, ileus of small bowel and perforation of small bowel and stomach appropriately administered antibiotic prophylaxis is effective with lower incidence of infection in surgical site and comparable risk of development of other nosocomial infections versus group without antibiotic prophylaxis. Secondary aim is to determine risk of developing nosocomial infection in the above mentioned group of patients, identify group of patients which does not benefit from prophylaxis, and compile financial costs for antibiotic prophylaxis and treatment of nosocomial infections and thus the background for the recommended procedure with regards that such prospective study does not exist in the Czech Republic.

Clinical and Financial Impact of an Evidenced-Based Adhesive Small Bowel Obstruction Management...

Intestinal Obstruction

This research study is for patients with adhesive small bowel obstruction (ASBO). ASBO is a condition in which the small intestine gets blocked due to scars called adhesions. To see the blockage, a contrast agent is given and an x-ray is taken of the belly (abdomen). MD Gastroview and omnipaque are two contrast agents that may be given as part of your normal care for ASBO. This study hopes to see if one is better than the other.
