The researchers propose that skin improvements may be seen following a course of Efudex, (5-fluorouracil), a FDA-approved topical therapy (applied directly to the skin). These improvements could be the result of both a reduction of actinic keratoses (small red horny growths or flesh-colored wartlike growths caused by overexposure to ultraviolet radiation or the sun) and improvement of sun-damaged skin. In addition, this research study is being done to determine if the expression of p53, a tumor suppressor gene (its activity stops the formation of tumors), is decreased following Efudex treatment. Mutations (abnormal changes) in the gene, called p53, are associated with a certain type of skin cancer. In addition, p53-mutated genes are known to exist in non-cancerous sun-damaged skin. Thus, the presence of p53 mutations may serve as a marker for both sun damage and an elevated risk of developing skin cancer.

Actinic keratosis (AK) is a skin condition that shows up on skin routinely exposed to the sun, such as the face, scalp, shoulders, chest, back, arms, and hands. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety of one, two, or three cycles of imiquimod for the treatment of AK. The AK lesions treated can be in adjacent and nonadjacent areas of the head, torso, and extremities. The total surface area for the AK lesions must be greater than 25 cm2. The secondary objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment with imiquimod in people with large surface areas of AK.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether topical application of PEP005 is safe for the treatment of actinic keratoses.

RATIONALE: Green tea extract contains ingredients that may inhibit the growth of actinic keratosis. PURPOSE: Randomized phase II trial to determine the effectiveness of green tea extract in treating patients who have actinic keratosis.

Erbium:yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) ablative fractional laser-assisted photodynamic therapy (AFL-PDT) has shown significant benefit for the treatment of actinic keratosis(AK). Er:YAG ablative fractional laser ablates the epidermis and dermis without significant thermal injury, creating microscopic ablation zones (MAZ) in the portion of the skin that the laser is applied to. The formed MAZ depends on the laser parameters such as laser depth, laser density and laser passes, which affect the treatment outcome.

Comparison of treatment efficacy and safety of pretreatment with ablative fractional laser versus microdermabrasion combined with large-area photodynamic therapy with methyl aminolevulinate for actinic keratoses
