Use of Atorvastatin (Lipitor) to Decrease Panel Reactive Antibody Titers

End-Stage Kidney Disease

The purpose of this study is to identify subjects who are highly sensitized with antibodies. It is difficult for these patients to find suitable kidneys. We propose to treat such patients to decrease the antibodies in such a way, that it may become possible to safely transplant kidneys into them.

Soy Protein in Early Diabetic Nephropathy

Diabetic NephropathyDiabetes Mellitus

Diabetic nephropathy is a frequent cause of end-stage renal disease. Reduction of dietary protein has been used to slow down renal disease progression, but patients are often unwilling to make these dietary changes. Other research suggests that changing the quality of dietary protein may be as effective as reducing the total amount of ingested protein. This study hopes to show that soy protein, a plant protein relatively high in essential amino acids and with high nutritional value, maye be beneficial to Type I diabetic patients with incipient renal disease.

SENSOR: Study to Investigate Cinacalcet Treatment in Haemodialysis Patients With Secondary Hyperparathyroidism...

Secondary HyperparathyroidismEnd Stage Renal Disease

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that the efficacy of cinacalcet when co-administered with the first meal after dialysis is comparable (non-inferior) to the efficacy of cinacalcet when administered during the dialysis study visit.

Research Study Evaluating Cinacalcet for Patients With End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)

End Stage Renal Disease

The purpose of this study is to observe the effects of a treatment strategy that incorporates cinacalcet HCl into the management of secondary hyperparathyroidism (HPT) in subjects with ESRD receiving hemodialysis, on bio-intact parathyroid hormone (biPTH), corrected serum calcium, serum phosphorus, and calcium phosphorus product.

Treatment for Subjects With Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Not Receiving Dialysis

Kidney Disease

The proposed study is designed to test a novel dosing paradigm that would facilitate the treatment of anemia in CKD patients not on dialysis. Anemic patients who have achieved and maintained target hemoglobin (Hb) on every 2 weeks (Q2W) dosing of darbepoetin alfa will have the dosing interval extended to once monthly (QM) dosing. Extending the dosing interval for darbepoetin alfa to QM represents a major potential benefit to both patients with CKD and their caregivers.

Vitamin D Repletion in Chronic Kidney Disease

Chronic Kidney Disease

The reason for doing this research is that people with kidney disease often suffer from heart disease. Why this happens is not fully known. A possible cause may be high blood levels of a substance made by bacteria called "endotoxin". The blood levels of this substance are high in people with medium-level kidney disease. We want to know if replacing normal amounts of Vitamin D can help lower the levels of this substance. We also want to know if replacing normal amounts of Vitamin D is associated with other changes that may help heart disease. We hope that our research will help figure out if levels of this substance can be lowered by replacing normal amounts of Vitamin D. Normal subjects are enrolled to have a 'control' set for comparison purposes.
