Age-related cataracts remain the leading cause of treatable blindness in China. The prevalence of cataract blindness continues to climb due to the expanding elderly subpopulation. Surgery is the only available treatment; however, the cataract surgical rate (CSR) in China remains relatively low relative to affluent countries or certain developing areas. Studies have reported that the primary barrier to cataract surgery is financial difficulty, and this challenge could be efficiently addressed by reducing the surgical fee or providing free cataract surgery. However, the prices, availability and affordability of medicines or medical services to the poor in China require further improvement. Although a host of free cataract screening and surgery programs have been widely implemented in rural areas of China, free cataract surgery programs have rarely been implemented in financially-challenged urban China. Even in Guangzhou, one of the largest metropolises in China, many low-income cataract patients, a neglected cohort, continue to need cataract surgery. A program titled "care for your eyes, lighten your life", jointly sponsored by the People's Government of Guangzhou Municipality, the Bureau of Civil Affairs of Guangzhou Municipality, and the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center (ZOC), has been initiated in Guangzhou to implement a program of free clinics in parks and free cataract surgery targeting the impoverished population living in urban China in 2012. After 3 years' exploration, the management mode of this program has been perfected, and approximately 4000 cataract surgeries had been performed on the low-income elderly. Although there are a large number of poor communities throughout the country, free cataract surgery programs in poor urban China are restricted to several metropolises due to limited medical resources and social overlook. Fully understanding patient satisfaction regarding the free cataract surgery program and understanding the patient characteristics of this special, neglected community may contribute to the improvement and the further expansion of the management mode of free cataract surgery programs.

The follow up time after keratoplasty now routinely exceeds multiple decades. It is common for keratoplasty patients to also undergo cataract surgery at a later date in their lives. Keratoplasties and cataract surgery both result in local inflammation. This may influence the density of endothelial cells, and on average there is a loss of 10% in endothelial cells within 3 months of the cataract surgery. Yet, a sufficient density of endothelial cells is required to maintain graft transparency. It may be therefore difficult to strike a balance between loss of visual acuity due to the cataract of to the loss of graft transparency over the long term. The investigators aim to compare graft survival in patients with clear crystalline lens with and without cataract surgery.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the IOP variation before and 30 days after performing phacoemulsification through pneumatic tonometry, in addition to evaluating the factors possibly related to this variation.

To investigate the prospective association between a vegetarian diet and chronic degenerative diseases in two cohorts of Taiwanese Buddhists

Prediction errors for the first (PE1) and second eyes (PE2) were obtained in the intra-ocular lens power calculation for 4 formulae (HofferQ, SRK II, SRK/T and Holladay 1). The optimal correction factor for each formula was determined as the one resulting in the lowest mean absolute error. A similar analysis was performed in the negative and positive PE1 subgroups.

A retrospective study of 5753 eyes of cataract surgery patients was conducted at our Clinic. Ocular optical components measured by optical low coherence reflectometry biometer LENSTAR LS 900® of the cataract myopic eyes with pseudoexfoliation syndrome were put in comparison with those of cataract myopic eyes group without pseudoexfoliation syndrome.

Cataract surgery in infantile eyes, which are microphthalmic, can be even more demanding. In addition, the frequent presence of other ocular and systemic anomalies such as nystagmus, glaucoma, amblyopia, and higher rate of postoperative complications may limit the success of cataract surgery. In our previous study, the investigators examined the intraoperative performance and postoperative outcomes of bilateral cataract surgery in microphthalmic eyes of patients before their first birthday. At 1 year, the postoperative results showed that good visual outcomes could be obtained in microphthalmic eyes. Since only a few studies have reported outcomes, and that too only short term of cataract surgery on microphthalmic eyes, in this prospective observational study we evaluated the long-term impact of bilateral cataract surgery on eyes with microphthalmos. The investigators examined the outcomes, complication rates, influence of age at surgery on pattern of axial growth and central corneal thickness and visual and orthoptic assessment in these eyes.

To Investigate the Prevalence of Capsular Bag Distention Syndrome To Analyze Influencing Factors of Capsular Bag Distention Syndrome

Purpose of this study is to compare the astigmatic power of the toric IOL obtained from the AcrySof toric calculator, TECNIS toric calculator, and iTrace toric calculator in a group of patients with preoperative with-the-rule (WTR) and against-the-rule (ATR) corneal astigmatism. The study included 100 eyes with cataract and greater than 0.75 diopter of corneal astigmatism, and the subjects were divided into WTR and ATR group. Keratometric value was measured using autokeratometry, IOLMaster partial coherence interferometry (PCI), iTrace incorporating corneal topography and ray-tracing aberrometry. Based on measured values, toric IOL power calculations were performed using AcrySof, TECNIS and iTrace toric calculators.
