The Effectiveness of the Neutropenic Diet in Pediatric Oncology Patients

Acute Lymphoblastic LeukemiaAcute Myelogenous Leukemia3 more

The purpose of this study is to determine if FDA approved food safety guidelines are equivalent to a low bacterial diet (the neutropenic diet) with respect to the acquisition of infections during neutropenia in a sample of pediatric cancer patients.

Learning Impairments Among Survivors of Childhood Cancer

Acute Lymphoblastic LeukemiaBrain Tumors

Children surviving some types of cancer have a higher risk of developing learning problems after cancer treatment than do children who have not had cancer or its treatment. Cancer treatment may cause problems with learning, attention, and memory. The purpose of this study is to identify brain changes that may underlie learning problems in cancer survivors and investigate whether methylphenidate (a stimulant medication) may reduce these problems. Subjects who have had treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) or a brain tumor will be asked to take part in this research study. Siblings of some subjects will also be asked to take part, so that their results can be compared with those of children who have had cancer treatment. We hypothesize that children receiving more aggressive therapy will have lower white matter brain volumes and these volumes will be significantly lower than age-matched siblings. We also hypothesize that children who take methylphenidate will show improvements on teacher and parent report measures of attention and social skills.

Low-Dose Prednisone or Methylprednisolone in Treating Patients With Newly Diagnosed Acute Graft-versus-Host...

Graft Versus Host DiseaseRecurrent Adult Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

This randomized phase III trial is studying low-dose prednisone or methylprednisolone to see how well they work compared with standard-dose prednisone or methylprednisolone in treating patients with newly diagnosed acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Glucocorticoids, such as prednisone or methylprednisolone at a starting dose of 2 mg/kg/day are standard treatment for acute graft-versus-host disease caused by a donor stem cell transplant. It is not yet known whether low-dose glucocorticoids are more effective than standard-dose glucocorticoids in treating acute graft-versus-host-disease

A Randomized Trial of Human Growth Hormone (hGH) vs Placebo in Intensively Treated Haemato-Oncology...

Multiple MyelomaAcute Lymphoblastic Leukemia2 more

About 90% of patients with haemato-oncologic malignancy lose their body muscle mass and also lose weight either due to chemotherapy induced nausea/vomiting or the high catabolic state due to fever, sepsis or chemotherapy. This impacts tremendously on the days in hospital and also on the treatment-related complications. Studies with Human Growth hormone (hGH) have shown that it increases lean body mass in adult patients with AIDS and animal models of cancer. At the same time, in vitro studies have shown that hGH has no effect on tumor cell growth. This study is designed to see if the use of hGH in immunocompromised patients with haematological malignancies prevents the loss of muscle mass and weight loss to some extent. This will be a blinded 1:1, randomised study including 150 patients whereby the patients will either receive hGH or a placebo. The doctors and the nurses will not know what drug the patient is receiving. Both hGH and the placebo will be given intravenously (if patients are receiving other intravenous antibiotics or haemopoietic support ) or subcutaneously (if platelets are above 20 x 109/L) The treatment will start on the first day of treatment and continue for 6 weeks.

Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation for Adult Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (2015)

Precursor Cell Lymphoblastic Leukemia-Lymphoma

This study is a prospective multicenter observational study to evaluate the feasibility and the efficacy of the conditioning regimens which are modified by the donor differences and the age of recipients among patients who will receive allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in their 1st or 2nd hematologic complete remission (CR).

Optimizing 6-mercaptopurine Therapy in Pediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia by Using Allopurinol...

Lymphoblastic LeukemiaAcute1 more

The study will investigate, in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia during maintenance treatment, if addition of allopurinol to conventional oral 6-mercaptopurine and methotrexate therapy, affects erythrocyte concentrations of 6-thioguanine and 6 methylmercaptopurine. The effect on hematological and liver toxicity parameters in blood will also be investigated as well as clinical toxicity.
