Subcortical Oscillations in Human Sleep Dysregulation

Parkinson DiseaseREM Behavior Disorder

Sleep problems are common in the United States (US) adult population (>50 million), and have a negative impact on quality of life, productivity, and healthcare. A major obstacle to understanding how the brain is involved in human sleep disorders has been the lack of recordings of human brain function, from inside the brain, during the known sleep states.

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation as a Treatment for Pain in Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson DiseaseNeuropathic Pain1 more

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a procedure that has been shown to improve pain in chronic sufferers. It is a well-tolerated procedure that can be performed on an outpatient basis. It uses a plastic covered coil that sends a magnetic pulse through the skull into the brain and by targeting particular areas in the brain it can be used to help modulate the perception of pain. The study intends to use this technique to treat such a disabling symptom in patients who suffer from Parkinson's Disease (PD). Initially the aim is to study this technique in ten patients who are suffering from pain and have PD. These patients would initially require an MRI scan which allows us to map the brain and target the correct brain areas for the delivery of the stimulation. The stimulation would be performed over ten sessions and the patients would be assessed by a clinician using well recognized clinical tools. It is anticipated that there will be a meaningful improvement in pain. It is also anticipated that TMS is a safe technique to use in patients with PD. The study will be used to help plan a future study that compares TMS with sham technique to prove whether TMS could be an option in the treatment of such a disabling condition.

Pharmacokinetic of Levodopa Study in Healthy Males

Parkinson Disease

The purpose of the study is to investigate PK of levodopa in plasma after repeated doses of 3 levodopa formulations given in combination with carbidopa and ODM-104 and compared to the PK of standard IR and CR levodopa formulations in the same combination.

Mass Balance Recovery, Metabolite Profile and Metabolite Identification of [14C]-BIA 9-1067

Parkinson Disease

The purpose is to and to assess the mass balance recovery after a single oral dose of [14C]-BIA 9-1067 and to provide plasma, urine and faecal samples for metabolite profiling and structural identification.

The Effect of Parkinson Kinetigraph Recordings on the Management and Outcome in Parkinson's Disease...

Parkinson Disease

With time most people with Parkinson's disease (PwP) develop fluctuations in motor symptoms in relation to medication intake. The prevalence may be both under and overestimated as it is based on history rather than observation. Patterns in fluctuations are difficult to determine and it has been demonstrated that every 30-minute diaries need to be kept for 10 days or more to safely represent fluctuation patterns. The Parkinson Kinetigraph (PKG) is an automated system that is carried passively and provides similar information after wearing the device for 6 days. Clinical experience is that most patients agree that results are representative to their experiences. It is not known if using the PKG routinely at any stage of PD will change management of the disease. The hypothesis of this study is that providing PKG information to neurologists will lead to a more active management that may improve outcome in PD patients.

PET Imaging in Parkinson Disease Dementia

Parkinson's Disease

The purpose of this study is to use a brain imaging method called PIB PET to determine dementia subtypes in patients with Parkinson's disease. The ultimate goal of this project is to be able to identify individuals with PD who are at risk of developing dementia, and to distinguish the underlying cause of dementia.

Parcopa Versus Carbidopa-levodopa in a Single Dose Cross-over Comparison Study

Parkinson's Disease

To find out if a single dose of Parcopa®, a form of levodopa that dissolves in your mouth, works faster than regular oral levodopa which is swallowed, in fluctuating PD patients.

Study to Evaluate Initiation of Stalevo in Early Wearing-off

Parkinson's Disease

An open, non-randomised, multinational, multicentre direct switch study in levodopa-treated Parkinson's disease patients suffering from early wearing-off in Parkinson's disease. The study will consist of 2 consecutive periods: screening period and study treatment period. Duration of the study will be up to 8 weeks for each subject. The study treatment dosage will be determined by the subject's current, separately administered standard levodopa/DDCI treatment (3-4 doses per day, maximum of total daily dose of 600 mg levodopa) which will be switched to an equivalent dose of Stalevo® without changing the number of doses per day. The levodopa daily dose during Stalevo® treatment may be adjusted according to the study subject's clinical response.

A Study to Evaluate Fixed Dose Carbidopa/Levodopa/Entacapone Versus Immediate Release Carbidopa/Levodopa...

Parkinson's Disease

The purpose of this study is to achieve approval for the use of carbidopa/levodopa/entacapone in early Parkinson's disease (PD) by demonstrating that when used as initial levodopa therapy in early PD, carbidopa/levodopa/entacapone provides significantly greater symptomatic benefit than immediate release carbidopa/levodopa administered at the same levodopa dosage level of 100 mg three times a day (t.i.d.).
