Lipoprotein Turnover on Low- and High-MUFA Portfolio Diets
HyperlipidemiaCardiovascular Diseases1 moreLow and very low carbohydrate diets, such as the Atkins' Diet, have recently gained attention for their potential health benefits from weight loss and have gained some scientific support from a growing number of studies. Benefits have been noted in relation to raised "good" cholesterol, lower "bad" cholesterol and triglycerides. Other studies have shown an advantage in substituting vegetable fat for carbohydrate in insulin resistant individuals and in some instances in type 2 diabetes where improvements were seen in "good" cholesterol and blood sugars. At the same time, our research have been exploring diets containing less processed carbohydrates and other components which in combination (portfolio diet) have a similar cholesterol lowering effect to drug therapy. Therefore we wish to determine whether our cholesterol-lowering components (portfolio diet) should be incorporated into lower carbohydrate diets especially to preserve "good" cholesterol and lower "bad" cholesterol for decreasing the risk of heart disease.
Effects of a Long Term Dietary Portfolio and of Sequential Removal of Food Components From the Diet...
HyperlipidemiaCardiovascular Diseases1 moreThe purpose of this study is to evaluate the long term effectiveness of the dietary portfolio, consisting of viscous fibers, soy products, nuts and plant sterols, as well as the effects of removing single food components from the dietary portfolio on cholesterol reduction and other cardiovascular risk factors.
Effects of Colesevelam HCl, Rosiglitazone, Sitagliptin on Control of Blood Glucose and Lipids in...
Type 2 DiabetesHyperlipidemiaA 16 week open-label study with subjects receiving background metformin monotherapy. 150 subjects randomized 1:1:1 to receive 1 of the following: open-label colesevelam HCl, open label rosiglitazone, or open-label sitagliptin.
Effects of L-Carnitine on Postprandial Clearance of Triglyceride-rich Lipoproteins in HIV Patients...
HyperlipidemiaHIV InfectionsIncluded in this study will be patients with HIV and being treated with highly active antiretroviral medications (HAART) including protease inhibitors (PI) or non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTI). Protease inhibitors and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors are very common medications in HIV treatment and are usually given with other medications as part of a standard treatment for HIV (HAART). We hope to learn more about how the levels of cholesterol-and triglyceride-carrying particles (lipoproteins) are affected by a nutritional supplement, L-Carnitine, in HIV-positive patients treated with antiretroviral medications.
Prospective Evaluation of Proteinuria and Renal Function in Non-diabetic Patients With Progressive...
HyperlipidemiaThe purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of Crestor (rosuvastatin) and (Lipitor) atorvastatin on urinary protein excretion over 1 year in non-diabetes with moderate proteinuria and hypercholesterolaemia.
Efficacy Study of Extended-Release Niacin/Lovastatin Versus Usual Care
HyperlipidemiaMixed Hyperlipidemia1 moreThe purpose of this study is to investigate the benefits of combination niacin ER/lovastatin in patients receiving standard care who are not at LDL goal per ATP III guidelines.
The Effect of Strawberries in a Cholesterol-Lowering Dietary Portfolio
HyperlipidemiaCardiovascular Diseases1 moreThe purpose of this study is to determine whether addition of strawberries to a dietary portfolio of cholesterol-lowering foods will improve compliance and so increase the effectiveness of the dietary portfolio in lowering cholesterol and improving cardiovascular risk factors.
Comparison of the Combination of Fenofibrate and Simvastatin Versus Atorvastatin
HyperlipidemiaMixed or combined hyperlipidemia is a common metabolic disorder characterized by both hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia. Statins and fibrates have complementary mechanisms and can be coadministered to patients with mixed hyperlipidemia. The overall objective of the study is to compare the efficacy and safety of combining fenofibrate and simvastatin versus atorvastatin monotherapy in patients with mixed hyperlipidemia at risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Amlodipine/Atorvastatin Combination to Reduce the Health Risk of High Blood Pressure and High Cholesterol...
HypertensionHyperlipidemiaThe purpose of the study is to measure the effect of the amlodipine/atorvastatin combination pill in reducing both elevated blood pressure and cholesterol levels to levels suggested by guidelines
Fish Oil and Alpha Lipoic Acid in Treating Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer's DiseaseOxidative Stress3 moreThe purpose of this study is to determine the effect of fish oil and the antioxidant alpha lipoic acid on factors in the blood that are associated with the progression of Alzheimer's Disease (AD).
