Phase I Drug-drug Interaction of Omega-3 and Atorvastatin

This study evaluates the safety and pharmacokinetic drug-drug interactions of omega-3 and atorvastatin in healthy male volunteers. Half of the participants will receive omega-3 for 16 days to be steady state of omega-3 and followed by omega-3 and atorvastatin in combination for 7 days. The other half will receive Atorvastatin for 7 days to be steady state of Atorvastatin, and followed by Atorvastatin and Omega-3 in combination for 16 days.

The study examines the effect of hormone replacement in postmenopausal women compared to men, 55 years of age, and in the elderly without hormone replacement of both sexes. The lipid and glucose metabolism is evaluated during treatment and placebo with a meal with mashed potatoes and different types of fat. Glucose, insulin, triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL and HDL cholesterol, free fatty acids and coagulation parameters are measured. During menopause the women reduce their levels of estrogen and their risk of cardiovascular disease rises to the men's level. This effect on mortality and morbidity can probably be reduced by hormone therapy.

Given preliminary data in animal (proprietary data) have shown that XXS (a mixture of natural polyphenolic extracts of edible plants) has a significant and favourable effect on oxidative stress notably with a decrease in certain markers of oxidative stress and on plasma lipid parameters, the investigator proposes to study the effect of 6 months of treatment with XXS in a controlled study against placebo in a population of persons presenting a lipid profile at the upper limit of normal.

Health Outcomes of Patients With Stable Chronic Disease Managed With a Healthcare Kiosk

The chronic disease burden is increasing worldwide leading to a rise in the demand for primary healthcare and a shortage of primary care physicians. Addressing this shortage entails a multi-prong approach with innovations in care delivery, greater use of healthcare technology, and more efficient use of all healthcare providers on the care team. We previously developed an interactive self-service healthcare kiosk (Self-empowering and enabling kiosk - SEEK® MyHealthKiosk) for the management of patients with stable chronic disease in the primary care setting. A feasibility study using SEEK showed high levels of acceptance and satisfaction from patients and healthcare providers. The aim of this follow-up study is to evaluate the health outcomes of patients with stable chronic disease who are on kiosk management compared to patients who are on routine management by nurse clinicians. We hypothesize that patients who are managed by the kiosk continue to maintain good disease control that are comparable to patients who are managed by a nurse clinician.

Oleocanthal Rich Olive Oil Acute Effects on Hyperglycemia and Platelet Activation in T2DM

This is a pilot acute dietary intervention study with a randomized cross-over design aiming to investigate whether acute supplementation of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) rich in oleocanthal could attenuate postprandial hyperglycemia and activation of platelets in T2DM patients. For this reason, non-insulin dependent diabetic patients (10-15) will be randomly assigned to consume in five different days white bread (50 g CHO) with butter, butter with ibuprofen, refined olive oil and olive oil with oleocanthal (250 mg/Kg 500 mg/Kg). Blood samples will be collected pre- and post-intervention up to 4 hours in order to determine platelet aggregation, postprnadial glycemia, lipemia, inflammation and oxidative stress. Taking into account the strong anti-inflammatory and anti-platelet properties of oleocanthal, this study will assess whether oleocanthal-rich olive oils could exert similar effects under real in vivo conditions in T2DM patients. It will also assess whether these effects are achieved through improvement of postprandial glycemia and lipemia.
