Intraoperative bleeding remains a major concern during liver resection. Pringle maneuver is the most frequently used method to occlude inflow blood of the liver.However, experimental and clinical studies have shown than even short periods of clamping produce some degree of ischemia-reperfusion injury that can result in hepatocellular damage,this damage being especially important in patients with abnormal liver parenchyma such as steatosis and cirrhosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the use of selective vascular clamping should be generalized to HCC patients and help to reduce the ischemia-reperfusion injury.

We conducted a randomized controlled trial of adjuvant interferon (IFN) therapy in patients with hepatitis-C virus (HCV)-related cirrhosis who underwent curative resection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) to investigate whether IFN could reduce or delay the incidence of recurrent tumor (secondary/tertiary prevention of HCC). Patients were randomly assigned to treatment with IFN (3MU thrice/wk /48 weeks) vs. no treatment after curative resection of HCC(control group)

Epirubicin and Celecoxib in Treating Patients With Hepatocellular Carcinoma

RATIONALE: Celecoxib may stop the growth of tumor cells by stopping blood flow to the tumor. Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining celecoxib with epirubicin may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This phase I/II trial is studying the side effects and best dose of epirubicin when given together with celecoxib and to see how well it works in treating patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer).

Study of Botanical PHY906 Plus Capecitabine for Advanced Unresectable Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Capecitabine is a chemotherapeutic that has been approved for use in breast and colorectal cancers. The advantages of capecitabine are that (1) it is an oral drug; and (2) it is less toxic than many other chemotherapeutics. In an off-label hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) clinical study, the response rate with capecitabine was 13%. The botanical drug PHY906--currently manufactured pursuant to GMP standards and regulations--has been used in China for over 1800 years to treat gastrointestinal-related ailments. Recently, preclinical studies demonstrated that PHY906 potentiates the anti-tumor effect of capecitabine. This trial will evaluate the safety and efficacy of PHY906 in enhancing the anti-tumor effects of capecitabine.

The Role of Low Molecular Weight Heparins in Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major tumor type worldwide, especially in China as the sequence of hepatitis B and liver cirrhosis. Activation of the coagulation system occurs commonly in patients with malignancy. Several studies have suggested that anticoagulant therapy may improve survival in patients with malignancy. The low molecular weight heparins (LMWHs) lend themselves to such studies because of their effects in experimental models of malignancy and the relative ease of administration compared with unfractionated heparin. The purpose of the present RCT was to determine whether addition of LMWH to transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) would improve HCC patient outcome compared with TACE alone.

An International Phase 2 Study Of SU011248 In Patients With Inoperable Liver Cancer

The study will consist of two parts. In Part 1 the study will start enrolling 38 patients and then further 25 patients up to a total of 63 eligible patients. If the study gives good results it can be expanded to a total of 160 patients. SU011248 will be administered orally daily for 4 weeks followed by a 2-week rest at a starting dose of 50 mg [milligrams] with provision for dose reduction based on tolerability. All patients will receive repeated cycles of SU011248 until disease progression, occurrence of unacceptable toxicity, or other withdrawal criteria are met. After discontinuation of treatment, patients will be followed up in order to collect information on further antineoplastic therapy and survival
