Is The Sudden Onset of Dizziness A Symptom of Acute Liver Dysfunction?

Dizziness

Dizziness is one of the most common complaints among patients admitted to the emergency department (ED). In most cases, the etiology remains unclear. Dizziness has a broad differential diagnosis. The initial symptoms of ALD can include many general complaints. Aim of this study is to investigate whether SOD is a symptom of ALD, the necessity of liver function tests for patients with SOD in the ED, and a cost analysis of liver function tests.

Glucose-induced Glucagon-like Peptide 1 (GLP-1) Secretion in NAFLD Patients Compared to Healthy...

Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver DiseaseNon Alcoholic Steatohepatitis

The incretin effect is impaired in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), thus GLP-1 receptor agonists are used for the treatment of T2DM. Insulin resistance is a pathophysiologic hallmark of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The incretin effect in patients with NAFLD has not been studied. The aim of this study is to quantify GLP-1 secretion in response to oral glucose tolerance test (oGTT) in patients with NAFLD compared to healthy controls. The results of this study will expand the knowledge of the pathophysiology of NAFLD and serve as a rational for potential future treatment strategies.

Adult-to-Adult Living Donor Transplant Cohort Study

Liver DiseasesHepatocellular Cancer3 more

The study is being conducted for the following reasons: To determine the prevalence, course, and predictors of poor Health Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) outcomes associated with living donor donation. To collect data and biosamples prior to, during, and after a living donor liver transplant (LDLT) among all donors and recipients for use by other adult-to-adult living donor liver transplant studies and future studies. To study the effects of pressure and flow on the outcomes of LDLT. To characterize the differences between living donor liver transplant and deceased donor liver transplant in terms of recipient post-transplant outcomes including patient and graft survival, surgical morbidity, and resource utilization. To compare the long-term histological outcomes in recipients of LDLT and deceased donor liver transplant (DDLT) with recurrent hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. To understand the history of pain management and to measure quality of care in pain control in living donors following partial hepatectomy.

Somatostatin Analogues as a Volume Reducing Treatment of Polycystic Livers (RESOLVE)

Polycystic Liver Disease

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of Lanreotide on polycystic liver and kidneys in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.

sgp130 in Chronic Human Liver Disease

Alcoholic Liver DiseaseChronic Hepatitis C Virus Infection

Chronic liver disease are characterized by increased levels of plasma IL-6, but the bioactivity of this cytokine in this disease is not well known. IL-6 receptor complex is regulated by multiple receptors subunits: the soluble form of IL-6 Receptor enhance IL-6 signal by a process called trans-signaling on cells expressing few membrane IL-6 receptors. Soluble gp130 is the natural inhibitor of IL-6 trans-signaling. The aim of this study is to characterize circulating and liver levels of theses compounds of IL-6 receptor complex, to unravel the bioactivity of IL-6 in this disease.

Role of CCL2 in Alcoholic Liver Diseases

Alcoholic Liver Disease

Immune dysregulations, including cytokines and chemokines secretions occurs in alcoholic liver disease. Serum levels and liver expression of CCL2 are increased in patients with alcoholic hepatitis but the role of this chemokine in the pathogenesis of alcoholic liver disease is nevertheless unknown. The aim of the study is to analyze plasma level and liver expression of CCL2 and their relation with liver disease severity and inflammatory infiltrate in our cohort of alcoholic patients. We studied also the association between -2518 CCL2 polymorphism and the severity of alcoholic liver disease.

Effect of Fructose Reduction on Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and Metabolic Syndrome...

Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

The aim of the present study is to find out if a dietary intervention mainly focusing on fructose reduction has a preventive effect on the development and progression of NAFLD and the metabolic syndrome in overweight children.

Liver Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Study of Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Fatty Liver

The purpose of this study is to evaluate how the liver receives and uses fats for energy. This will help the investigators further understand the physical and chemical processes responsible for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) in overweight females with or without NAFLD who are scheduled to undergo gastric bypass surgery.

Morbid ObesityInsulin Resistance1 more

The purpose of this research is to further study the effect weight loss after gastric bypass surgery has on the heart and blood pressure and on how the body uses or metabolizes the sugars, fats and proteins we eat. Additionally, the researchers want to study fat tissue for gene patterns which may be responsible for where we carry fat on our bodies, as well as look carefully at a possible link between adipose tissue and insulin resistance. The researchers also want to evaluate the liver for the presence of fatty liver, which is common in people with obesity and is associated with insulin resistance, as well as study the liver for gene patterns which may be associated with non-alcoholic liver disease. Evaluating cardiovascular function and endocrine function before and after gastric bypass surgery, as well as studying adipose and liver tissue may help us understand the link between obesity, insulin resistance, fatty liver disease, high blood pressure and health problems such as diabetes and heart disease. Consequently, this may help in the future by identifying those who will benefit most from gastric bypass surgery.

Study of T Cell Phenotype Activation Pathway in Human Alcoholic Liver Disease

Alcoholic Liver DiseaseChronic Hepatitis C Virus

Alcoholic liver disease is characterized by circulating T cell activation and liver T cell infiltration but their phenotype is poorly studied. The aim of the study is to test the hypothesis that the (CD4+ T cell secreting Interleukin-17) Th17 pathway is involved in alcoholic liver disease.
