Non-specific Low Back PainFunctional CapacitiesDespite the prevalence of chronic low back pain, functional symptomatology of this disease remains poor and treatment decisions are based mainly on subjective data (importance and pain tolerance). However, there are some experimental elements that involve objective assessment of locomotor capabilities - at forefront objectives which the walking velocity in the evaluation of this pathology in terms of severity of functional impairment. Recent evidence suggest the effectiveness of physical rehabilitation program for improving patients functional capacities and their reintegration in socio-professional life. This retrospective study aims to quantify the evolution of the parameters collected during standardized walking tests performed before and after rehabilitation program. These patients have systematically carry out a comfortable walk test (400m walk test) and a brisk walk test (200m) at the beginning and end of their program. Furthermore, a maximal stress test on a treadmill was performed before the program in order to detect any cardiovascular events and to allow the personalization of the effort level required (target heart rate) during rehabilitation. In this study the evolution of the comfortable and fast speed will be collected and compared with the stress test data, and other measured parameters (functional score of Quebec, muscle Tests Shirado and Sorensen).

It is hypothesised that patients believing that staying active will help them recover will have higher odds of a 30%-improvement in The Roland Morris Disability score after 52 weeks compared to patients disagreeing that staying active will lead to better recovery.
Clinical Outcome After Lumbar Fusion
Chronic Low Back PainThe main objective of this prospective study is to compare the clinical outcomes after lumbar fusion for chronic low back pain using the four techniques commonly employed in our surgical practice. Lumbar fusion stops motion at a painful vertebral segment, which can decrease back pain. The four techniques are standard transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (S TLIF), minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MI TLIF), extreme lateral interbody fusion (XLIF), and axial lumbar interbody fusion (AxiaLIF). Each differ in where incisions are made and level of invasiveness; not all may be implemented in each surgical case. The four different techniques are all standard approaches with different advantages and have yet to be compared in efficacy for relieving chronic low back pain.

Low Back PainThe purpose of the present study is to determine the association between factors known to be associated with the development of chronic low back pain (psychological and biological) and the evolution of functional disability in individuals with a history of low back pain. To do so, 100 individuals with a history of nonspecific low back pain will be followed over a period of 18 months. During this time frame, participants will be evaluated three times in the laboratory (initial, at 6 months and at 18 months) to determine pain and tolerance thresholds, pain inhibition processes as well as neuromuscular activation. Moreover, these participants will be assessed every three months (initial, 3, 6, 9 12, 15 and 18 months) for functional disability and pain intensity levels of their low back pain as well as for psychological symptoms usually associated with the development of chronic low back pain. It is hypothesized that high psychological symptoms measured initially will be associated with high functional disability throughout the study .
Characterizing the Role of Pain Sensitivity in Acute to Persistent Low Back Pain
Low Back PainThis research study will examine whether enhanced pain sensitivity increases the risk of persistent low back pain. The study will address the highly prevalent and costly condition of persistent low back pain and a major obstacle for the implementation of clinical strategies to improve patient outcomes. The knowledge gained from this study may lead to a better understanding of the biological mechanisms that contribute to persistent low back pain and will inform future work to develop predictive measures of persistent low back pain risk, evaluative measures to examine treatment efficacy, and possibly biomarker assay(s) to identify patients who are at increased risk of persistent low back pain.
