Validation of a Multi-gene Test for Lung Cancer Risk

The purpose of this study is to determine the validity of a multi-gene Lung Cancer Risk Test (LCRT). In the process, the investigators will establish a bank of NBEC samples and corresponding blood samples from individuals demographically at increased risk for lung cancer.

Xenografts and cell cultures provide sufficient material for analyses at the protein, RNA and DNA level. Patient derived NSCLC xenografts and cell lines are available but none however are Asian in origin. Given the emerging evidence to suggest inter-ethnic differences in NSCLC biology, new models of preclinical drug evaluation should be designed and validated using Asian tumors. Furthermore, such models will allow studies of biological mechanisms of sensitivity and/or resistance and also the study of dynamic regulations under standardized conditions in the Asian context.

Recent research also indicates that there is a possible association to the degree of aggressiveness of the disease. The importance of these mutations is controversial, because the data are based on small studies with highly selected patients. In this project the investigators want to study the types and frequencies of EGFR mutations in both untreated and treated patients in a systematic manner and relate this to survival. The thorough registration of patient data in DK enables us to create a strong The investigators expect this knowledge to be of greatest importance for future rational use of drugs targeting the EGF receptors.

An Analysis of Treatment Timelines for Lung Cancer Patients Across System Evolutions

This study is a single center, minimal risk, physician initiated retrospective chart review. An analysis of treatment timelines for patients diagnosed with lung cancer within the St. Elizabeth system from January 2013 until study completion. The study investigator and designee(s) will review patient electronic medical records, extracting data related to the symptom presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of new diagnoses of lung cancer. Collected data will focus on dates of encounters, diagnostic imaging/procedures, and treatments, with data analysis evaluating time between care encounters and potential delays in care. The data will be further stratified based on system-wide changes implemented to improve efficiency, patient outcomes, and patient experience.
