It is not yet known which combination chemotherapy regimen is more effective for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of two different combination chemotherapy regimens in treating patients who have stage III or stage IV non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

LymphomaRATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Peripheral stem cell transplant may allow the doctors to give higher doses of chemotherapy drugs and kill more cancer cells. It is not yet known which combination chemotherapy regimen given before peripheral stem cell transplant is more effective in treating relapsed Hodgkin's lymphoma. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is comparing different regimens of combination chemotherapy followed by peripheral stem cell transplant to see how well they work in treating patients with relapsed Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Monoclonal antibodies such as rituximab can locate tumor cells and either kill them or deliver tumor-killing substances to them without harming normal cells. Combining monoclonal antibody therapy with chemotherapy may kill more tumor cells. It is not yet known if combination chemotherapy plus filgrastim is more effective with or without rituximab in treating non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to determine the effectiveness of combination chemotherapy plus filgrastim with or without rituximab in treating older patients who have non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
