Prophylactic Ranibizumab for Exudative Age-related Macular Degeneration
Age-related Macular DegenerationThis study will determine whether quarterly injections of Ranibizumab may prevent eyes with dry age-related macular degeneration from progressing to wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Long Term Effects of Lutein/Zeaxanthin and Omega-3- Supplementation for Two More Years (LUTEGA 2)...
Age Related MaculopathyThe primary objective of LUTEGA 2 is it to determine the long term effect (about 2 more years after LUTEGA 1, NCT00763659) of the supplementation with a fixed combination of lutein/zeaxanthin and omega-3- fatty acids in two different dosages on the optical density (OD) of macular pigment in patients with non- exudative age related maculopathy. The dosage groups are crossed after LUTEGA 1.
Walnuts and Healthy Aging
Age Related Cognitive DeclineAge Related Macular DegenerationThis will be a systematic investigation of the role of walnuts in preventing or slowing age related cognitive decline and age related macular degeneration. 700 subjects will be recruited between 2 sites, Loma Linda University in California, USA and Hospital Clinic in Barcelona, Spain. Participants will be randomly assigned to either the walnut group or the control group for a 2 year intervention. Baseline and annual data will be collected and analyzed.
A Safety and Efficacy Study of Carbidopa-levodopa in Patients With Macular Degeneration
Age-related Macular DegenerationFrom 3 large patient databases, patients diagnosed with AMD who have never taken levodopa(L-DOPA) containing medications have a mean age of diagnosis at 71 years. Patients who have been treated with L-DOPA containing medications have a mean age of diagnosis of AMD at 79 years. L-DOPA binds to GPR143 in the retinal pigment epithelium, and releases PEDF, which protects the retina and downregulates VEGF, which is the cause of neovascularization. The Investigators will evaluate the safety and tolerability of carbidopa-levodopa in patients with AMD, and measure the effects on surrogate functional biomarkers of AMD.
Efficacy and Safety of Brolucizumab 6mg in a Treat and Extend Regimen in Patients With Neovascular...
Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)The purpose of this study is to assess whether switching nAMD patients from aflibercept to brolucizumab would permit extension of treatment intervals while maintaining treatment efficacy, thereby alleviating the treatment burden on patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals (HCPs), and medical institutions.
Omega 3 and Vitamin D Dosage in a Population With Moderate to High Risk of AMD
Age-related Macular DegenerationVitamin D DeficiencyObjectives: The investigators conducted a prospective study in Belgium with the objective to determine the proportion of subjects identified at moderate-to-high risk for AMD, based on the STARS® questionnaire, in need of nutritional supplementation by assessing their vitamin D, zinc oxide and fatty acid profile status. Methods: This multicentre epidemiological intervention pilot study involved 50 Belgian subjects with no AMD or early AMD, aged over 55, at moderate-to-high risk for AMD based on a simplified AMD risk assessment scale (STARS®) score ≥ 10, not taking vitamin D or trace nutrient containing supplements. Outcome data was collected during a one-time subject interview comprising of clinical eye examinations (typically visual acuity), the STARS® questionnaire, visual acuity assessment, an OCT scan on the macula, and fundus photography. Blood samples were collected from the patients and serum analysis was performed to determine the levels of omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, EPA and DHA, zinc and cupric oxide, and vitamin D, recognised as key nutrients involved in AMD pathophysiology.
A Virtual Reality Platform Simulating Visual Impairment for Testing of Electronic Travel Aids and...
Visual ImpairmentAge-Related Macular Degeneration2 moreIn this study, the study team utilize virtual reality (VR) to simulate visual impairments of different types and severity in healthy subjects. The platform implements three of the most widespread forms of visual impairment in the United States (US): age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR), and glaucoma, each with three levels of severity, (mild, moderate, and severe). At present, glaucoma is further developed toward a multidimensional visual impairment simulation. The platform is utilized: i) to provide a safe, controllable, and repeatable set of environments for development and preliminary testing of electronic travel aids (ETAs) in a variety of conditions (i.e., using the ETA to navigate in the immersed environment); and ii) to equip blind and low vision (BVI) professionals, inclusive of orientation and mobility (O&M) instructors, with a controlled, tunable training platform for skill/capacity building, assessment, and refinement of O&M techniques, as well as visually impaired trainees with a safe and immersive environment to improve their O&M skills and learn novel techniques. Two sets of hypothesis-driven experiments are proposed to assess the feasibility of the platform with respect to these two objectives.
Non-Responsive Diabetic Macular Edema and Spironolactone
Diabetic MaculopathyDiabetic patients with macular edema and choroidal hyperpermeability (as manifested as a thick choroid on OCT (optical coherence tomography) and ICG hyperfluorescence on ICG) unresponsive to anti-VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) and steroid injections will be treated with spironolactone in addition to the continued treatment of anti-VEGF injections, specifically aflibercept (Eylea).
Microcurrent Stimulation for Dry Age-related Macular Degeneration
Dry Age-related Macular DegenerationEvaluate the safety and efficacy of microcurrent stimulation therapy for patients with dry age-related macular degeneration.
FLIO and the Influence of Oral Lutein Supplementation on Macular Pigment
Age Related Macular DegenerationTo investigate the effects of lutein supplementation on macular pigment density using FLIO and MPOD measurements in patients with age-related macular degeneration and healthy subjects over a course of 6 months.
