A Study of the Effect of Carbamazepine on the Pharmacokinetics of Paliperidone Extended Release...
SchizophreniaBipolar DisorderThe purposes of this study are to evaluate the effects of a potent metabolic enzyme inducer, carbamazepine, on the steady-state pharmacokinetics of orally administered paliperidone ER and to evaluate the safety and tolerability of the treatments in clinically stable patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia or bipolar I disorder.
Cognitive Training to Improve Work Outcomes in Severe Mental Illness
SchizophreniaBipolar Disorder1 moreThis study will compare the efficacy of two types of supportive treatments for a program called Individual Placement and Support, which helps people with severe mental illnesses find and keep jobs.
Effects of Pentazocine Versus Lorazepam on Manic Symptoms
Bipolar DisorderSchizoaffective Disorder3 morePilot data indicates that pentazocine decreases manic symptoms in hospitalized individuals. To follow up these initial findings, we plan to conduct a larger, more rigorous, double-blind study. We will examine whether pentazocine, an agent with kappa-opiate activity, decreases manic symptoms.
Valproic Acid Sodium Salt in Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar DisorderTo determine the total and local gray matter volumes, and N-acetyl aspartate (NAA) levels in patients with bipolar disorders who are within euthimic, depressive or manic/hypomanic period and who are not taking drug; To investigate the neuroprotective effects of long-term (6 weeks) use of valproate on total and local gray matter volumes and NAA levels. To measure the brain electrical response to visual and auditory impulses before and after valproate treatment in patients within euthimic, depressive or manic/hypomanic period and who are not taking drug, and to compare the data with each other and with normal groups. To determine the cognitive functions before and after the valproate treatment in the same patient group, to compare the data with each other and with age- and sex-paired normal controls; To determine the relationship between these effects of valproate and clinical improvement; To investigate the relationship between cognitive ability status and electrical activity of brain, to compare this with that in control group; to determine the relationship between the data and brain imaging (MRI/MRS) findings in conjunction with localization
Efficacy and Tolerability of Topiramate in Treatment of Bipolar Mania and Alcohol Use in Adolescents...
Bipolar DisorderAlcohol AbuseThe purpose of this research study is to study the effects (both good and bad) of combining quetiapine and topiramate for treating symptoms of bipolar mania (an illness with periods of elation, excessive excitement, irritability, high energy, racing thoughts, poor sleep, poor judgment, reckless behavior) and to study the effects (both good and bad) of combining quetiapine and topiramate for reducing use of alcohol.
An Evaluation Of BW430C (Lamotrigine) Versus Placebo In The Prevention Of Mood Episodes In Bipolar...
Bipolar DisorderThis study is planned to objectively assess the efficacy and safety of lamotrigine maintenance therapy after symptoms of mood episode had been stabilised by open-label treatment with lamotrigine alone or in combination with other psychotropic medication in patients with bipolar I disorder.
Antibodies to Digoxin for Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar DisorderSubjects suffering from bipolar disorders treated with specific medications will give their informed concent and will receive intravenously only one dose of Digoxin antibodies (Fab). Their response to this therapy will be measured accordingly.Previous medications will be not changed A base line serum Endogenous Digitalis-like Compounds (DLC)levels will be measured using a specific laboratory technique and these compounds will be measured at 6 and 24 hours after Fab therapy. Patients also will be followed using clinical and psychological tests
Tamoxifen in Treatment of Acute Mania
Bipolar DisorderObjective: Evidence indicates that the protein kinase C-PKC signaling cascade may be one of the direct targets in treatment of mania. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the PKC inhibitor-tamoxifen has anti-manic properties. Method: Bipolar subjects with manic/mixed episode were randomly assigned to receive either tamoxifen (80mg/day) or identical placebo tablets in 1:1 ratio for three weeks.
A Study to Evaluate the Effectiveness and Safety of Extended-Release (ER) Paliperidone Compared...
Bipolar DisorderThe purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of oral extended-release (ER) paliperidone compared with placebo in the prevention of the recurrence of mood symptoms in patients with Bipolar I Disorder who initially respond to treatment of an acute manic or mixed episode with paliperidone ER. Olanzapine was included as an active control arm, although the study is not designed to allow for a direct comparison of olanzapine with paliperidone.
Olanzapine/Fluoxetine Combination Versus Comparator in the Treatment of Bipolar I Depression
Bipolar DisorderThe purpose of this study is to assess olanzapine/fluoxetine combination and lamotrigine comparative efficacy, safety and tolerability in acute and longer term treatment of bipolar depression.
