Effects of L-citrulline Supplementation on Vascular Function in Metabolic Syndrome
Metabolic SyndromeMenopauseThe objective of this project is to provide evidence that L-Citrulline (CIT) supplementation can improve vascular function in the fasted and acute hyperglycemia conditions in middle-aged and older women with metabolic syndrome.
Impact of Yo-Yo Sleep on Cardiometabolic Health
Cardiometabolic SyndromeObesityThe goal of this clinical trial is to test the impact of repeated intermittent short sleep, with short sleep maintained 5 days per week followed by 2 days of prolonged sleep, compared to daily adequate sleep, on energy balance and cardiometabolic risk. A secondary goal of this research is to determine if maintaining a constant midpoint of sleep while undergoing intermittent short sleep, leads to better outcomes than intermittent short sleep with a 2-hour delay in sleep midpoint. The aims of this research will be tested in the context of a 3-group, parallel-arm, outpatient intervention of 8 weeks in duration, in young-to-middle-aged adults (aged 18-49 years).
Promoting Immune Health by Intermittent Fasting: a Pilot Study
Metabolic SyndromeHEALTHY VOLUNTEERS3 moreThe goal is to study the direct effects of long-term intermittent fasting on immune cell populations in the blood, combined with analyses of systemic metabolic fitness and inflammatory activation of leukocytes.
Cardiometabolic Effects of Sweet Cherry Juice
ObesityMetabolic SyndromeThis study aims to determine the effects of consuming sweet cherry juice on cardiovascular function, glucose regulation, and lipid status in overweight human subjects. The investigators hypothesize that sweet cherry juice consumption will improve metabolic and physiological status in overweight persons compared to a placebo.
Effect of Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy on Risk of Metabolic Syndrome
CholelithiasisMetabolic SyndromeProspective cohort study. POPULATION: patients with gallstone disease qualified for laparoscopic cholecystectomy INTERVENTION: patients undergoing cholecystectomy for gallstones COMPARISON: gallstone disease without surgery in an observation period OUTCOME: metabolic syndrome symptoms evaluated in 3 months period The main inclusion criteria is cholelithiasis confirmed by ultrasound examination in patients between 18-75 years old. The main exclusion criteria are metabolic syndrome, diabetes, thyroid diseases, pancreatic diseases, serious abdominal surgeries in the past, pregnancy, and lactation. Participants who qualified for laparoscopic cholecystectomy in 3 months are included in the investigation group. Those not having cholecystectomy planned in the upcoming three months for any reason (no consent for surgery, long term) are included in the control group. The intervention is to assess all metabolic syndrome criteria (blood pressure, glucose tolerance, dyslipidemia, abdominal obesity) before and three months after surgery. The endpoint is to evaluate if the risk of metabolic syndrome after cholecystectomy is higher than in patients with gallstones.
Effect of Nutritional Supplementation With Turmeric on the Cognitive Performance of Subjects With...
Mild Cognitive ImpairmentThe EPICURO study aims to demonstrate the beneficial effects of a 6-month dietary supplementation with an improved bioavailable turmeric (MERIVA®) on inflammatory, oxidative and metabolic parameters together with cognitive performance, potentially resulting in the reduction of the risk of cognitive decline in subjects, male and female, with Metabolic Syndrome. The results obtained will provide novel insights on MERIVA® for improving the prevention of age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease.
Brown Fat Activation and Browning Efficiency Augmented by Chronic Cold and Nutraceuticals for Brown...
Energy ExpenditureObesity1 moreOur body fat (adipose tissue) is largely made up of white adipose tissue (WAT) that stores surplus energy as white fat depots. In addition, adult humans have another type of fat similar to the brown fat in babies that burns up fat to generate heat for maintenance of body temperature during cold exposure. Adults have much lesser amounts of such brown adipose tissue (BAT), most of which are located within the sides of the neck and under the skin above the collar bones as well as along the sides of the spine. BAT consists of both classical brown fat identical to that found in babies as well as beige fat (composed of brown-in-white or 'brite' fat cells) found mainly in adults. Both types of BAT burn fat upon activation by various stimuli such as cold or by substances like curcumin found in turmeric ginger rhizome root. This study is carried out to find out the effects of cold stimulation and/or a known BAT-activating nutraceutical among those overweight/obese people suffering from metabolic syndrome.
Metabolic Syndrome in Diabetic Smokers Using Cigarettes & Combustion-Free Nicotine Delivery Systems...
Cardiovascular Risk FactorDiabetes Mellitus1 moreVery little is known about the impact of combustion-free nicotine delivery systems (C-F NDS) on cardiovascular risk factors in T2DM patients who smoke. Data from clinical studies to identify any potential reduction in individuals' risk, relative to the risk of continued smoking, are needed. This study aims to test the hypothesis that avoiding exposure to cigarette smoke toxicants may translate to measurable improvement in cardiovascular risk factors and functional parameters when T2DM patients who smoke switch to using C-F NDS compared with T2DM patients who continue to smoke conventional tobacco products. The investigators propose a prospective 2-year multicenter randomized controlled trial (RCT) to evaluate changes in cardiovascular risk factors and functional parameters in diabetic smokers using C-F NDS and compared to those continuing cigarette smoking.
Effect of Mulberry Fruit Powder in Metabolic Syndrome
Metabolic SyndromeMetabolic syndrome is a raising concern globally, especially in developing countries such as Pakistan. To prevent its risk factors diet and lifestyle modification is major solution. Functional foods have additional benefits of treating disease while providing basic nutrients. Mulberry is a native fruit with the properties of functional food, it is rich in anthocyanin and different anti-obesity,anti-diabetic, and anti-hyperlipidemic treating potential antioxidants. Mulberry will prove its therapeutic potential against the risk factors of metabolic syndrome.
Understanding Components of Mind-body Exercise for Physical Activity Engagement in Metabolic Syndrome...
Metabolic SyndromeThe aim of this study is to assess the feasibility and acceptability (e.g., enrollment, adherence, retention, acceptability of procedures and interventions) of a pilot factorial study design that will help elucidate components of mind-body exercise interventions. The study involves completing a walking program, a mindful attention program, a walking program that includes mindful attention, or no program at all. A "pilot" study is a smaller study that helps researchers to understand whether the study design can be carried out and what participants think about the study.
