The DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) have been proven to lower risk of cardiovascular diseases. But the DASH diet is inconsistent with Chinese dietary pattern. In this study, based on the typical Cantonese diet, the healthy Cantonese diet is developed according to the DASH diet and the balanced dietary pattern of the Chinese Dietary Guidelines 2016. The randomized control trial is designed to investigate whether the healthy Cantonese diet has benefit to blood pressure, blood lipid, blood glucose and other cardiometabolic biomarkers among adults with cardiometabolic syndrome in Guangdong, China.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is highly prevalent all over the world. MetS is largely under-diagnosed in children and adolescents. Obesity and hypertension are two important requirements for criteria of MetS. With early detection and early intervention of MetS in children and adolescents will enable better care to reduce the heavy burden of health care all over the world. Investigators intend to recruit 150 children and adolescents age 6 to 18 yr with overweight/obesity or prehypertension/hypertension and 50 normal age-matched controls to reach the following research goals: 1) To identify biomarkers as risk factors; 2) To characterize that impact of vascular assessment in preMetS children; and 3) To examine the relationship among biomarkers, vascular assessment parameters, and metabolic phenotypes.

Comorbidities and Virologic Outcome Among Patients on Anti-retroviral Therapy in Rural Lesotho

This study is conducted in a cohort of HIV-positive patients on first-line anti-retroviral therapy (ART) in rural health facilities in Lesotho, Southern Africa. It examines virologic treatment failure as well as chronic communicable and non-communicable comorbidities among patients on ART. The study has two phases. Phase 1 consists of a cross-sectional survey to determine prevalence of treatment failure as well as the prevalence of the following comorbidities: diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia, depression, alcohol use disorder, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Phase 2 is a cohort study, where patients with treatment failure or a comorbidity or both are followed-up for 12 months.

The role among metabolic syndrome and breast cancer risk is not well understood and must be further explored. The objective of this study is to evaluate the association between metabolic syndrome and breast cancer in Southern Brazil. In this case-control study, breast cancer patients and controls without malignant disease, matched for age (±5 years) and menopausal status, were interviewed and asked to make a glucose, HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides test. Waist circumference and blood pressure were measured using standardized procedures. Metabolic Syndrome was considered by NCEP ATP III (2001) and IDF (2006) definitions. Cases and controls were compared in relation to the presence of diagnosed MetS (yes/no), number of metabolic abnormalities identified (1 to 5) for each definition, and according to each metabolic abnormality cutoff point.
