With improved AIDS treatment leading to extended survival, HIV-infected individuals face a higher metabolic syndrome incidence. This study aims to determine the prevalence of Non-AIDS related Comorbidities (NARC) in HIV-infected individuals. Using purposive and snowball sampling, the cross-sectional survey targets 400 HIV-infected individuals aged 40 and above. Data collection includes demographics, physical activity, nutrition, depression, and physiological measurements. Analyzing the data through statistical tests and structural equation modeling, the study aims to provide precise care recommendations for preventive medicine and healthy aging in this population.

Medication Review in Patients With Schizophrenia and Diabetes

This study aims to investigate the potential beneficial effects of a medication review by a clinical pharmacologist on patients with coexisting schizophrenia and diabetes. The study is an intervention study in which an intervention group is assigned to the medication review whereas a control group is not. Both groups are tested using a thorough test battery at baseline and 6 months after inclusion. Furthermore a qualitative data assessment will be undertaken using interviews and surveys in order to show any obstacles in implementing the intervention. This is relevant as medication reviews, performed by clinical pharmacologists as well as pharmacists, are not always implemented by the primary physician.

Effects of Aromatherapy for Older Adults at Risk of Metabolic Syndrome in the Community

Background: According to statistics, Taiwan will become a super-aged society in 2025, and health promotion and care for the elderly are important issues of public health. With the prolongation of life, the older adults need to face their physical weakness, decline in psychological, cognitive and social related functional abilities, the prevalence of chronic diseases and the increase in the disabled population, which has a considerable impact on individuals, families and the overall social economy. However, most older adults suffering from chronic diseases are often accompanied by physical dysfunction, which affects the quality of sleep, causes emotional distress and emotional disorders, and leads to a decline in the quality of life. Studies have found that aromatherapy can not only improve sleep and emotional problems, but also relieve physical discomfort caused by diseases, achieve the purpose of reducing medical costs and improving quality of life. However, there are very few studies regrading older adults who are at risk of metabolic syndrome in community and the effects of inhalation of compound essential oils on their sleep and quality of life. Therefore, this study will explore the use of aromatherapy to improve the quality of sleep and life of the elderly. The research results can be used as a reference for community bases to promote the improvement of sleep and quality of life for older adults, so as to achieve the goal of healthy aging.

Dietary interventions have been consistently proposed as a part of a comprehensive strategy to lower the incidence and severity of atherosclerosis and coronary vascular disease. Excessive comsumption of fats enriched in saturated fatty acids (SFAs) is associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases (CVD). In contrasts, replacement of SFAs with monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω3-LCPUFAs) has been reported to be inversely associated with risk of atherosclerosis. This is partly due to the ability of MUFAs (and ω3-LCPUFAs) to modulate lipoprotein composition, oxidation state, and consequently their functionality, among others. While most of the nutritional studies have focused on elucidating the mechanisms by which dietary fats affect lipoprotein particles, little or nothing is known about the regulatory effect of dietary fatty acids on extracellular vesicles (EVs). EVs are small phospholipid particles that convey molecular bioactive cargoes and play essential roles in intercellular communication and, hence, a multifaceted role in health and disease. For the first time, the purpose of this project is to establish whether the type of major fatty acids present on a diet (SFAs, MUFAs, or ω3-LCPUFAs) may alter the structure, cargo, and functionality of postprandial- and long-term-EVs. In the precision nutrition era, the investigators expect to offer a new insight on EVs and their relationship with dietary fatty acids through the following objectives: 1) To map changes in the lipidome, proteome, microtranscriptome, and functional properties of circulating EVs in healthy subjects and patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS) both at fasting and at postprandial state upon a challenge of a meal rich in SFAs, MUFAs, and ω3-LCPUFAs; 2) To analyse the contribution of postprandial triacylglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRL) on EVs-mediated intercellular communication in a fatty acid-dependent manner; and 3) To determine the influence of diets rich in SFAs, MUFAs, and ω3-LCPUFAs on EVs in an animal model of atherosclerosis in the setting of MetS. Collectively, this project will provide fundamental insight into EV biology, and remarks the clinical and functional relevance and divergent consequences of dietary fatty acids in health and disease.

Bariatric surgery improves health outcomes with a maximal weight loss on average occurring 1 year after surgery but with dramatic between-subjects variability in weight loss (ranging from 20 to 160% excess weight loss) for reasons that remain to be elucidated. The investigators hypothesize that targeting the 3 months pre-surgery period by a calibrated dietary intervention, with fiber enrichment and biotin, will improve gut microbiota richness and subsequently improve subjects' metabolic health that may optimize post bariatric surgery outcomes. The study is designed as a pilot, comparative, randomized, open-label trial with 4 arms: standard of care, biotin only, fibers only, biotin + fibers.

Intermittent fasting is a method of restricting calories over a defined period of time and includes regimens such as whole-day fasting, alternate-day fasting, and time-restricted feeding. There is emerging evidence that intermittent fasting or energy restriction might be more beneficial than continuous energy restriction for some risk factors. The effect of intermittent fasting on risk factors associated with obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, however, is not clear. The European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) has yet to make any recommendations regarding the role of intermittent fasting in the management of diabetes. To inform the update of the EASD Clinical Practice Guidelines for Nutrition Therapy, tthe Diabetes and Nutrition Study Group (DNSG) of the EASD has commissioned a systematic review and network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials of the effect of different intermittent fasting strategies on established cardiometabolic risk factors. The findings generated by this proposed knowledge synthesis will shape guide current guidelines and improve health outcomes by educating healthcare providers and patients, and by guiding future research design.

The goal of this study is to (1) learn how individuals react to lifestyle choices and suggestions by examining a small group of people with similar health and lifestyle profiles; and (2) to develop algorithmic policies (male/female) that will help people optimize their health through lifestyle interventions and supplementation with prebiotics.
