Kefir and Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic SyndromeObesity3 more

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of metabolic disorders which increases the risk for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In recent years, research has shown that probiotics may have positive effects on metabolic syndrome components. Although several health-promoting effects of kefir, have been suggested, there is limited evidence for its potential effect on metabolic syndrome. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the effects of kefir on metabolic disorders including obesity, dyslipidemia, diabetes, and hypertension. To address the research gap, this study aimed to investigate the effects of daily kefir consumption on metabolic syndrome components, inflammatory response and gut microbiota composition in adults with MetS. The study was planned as a randomized, controlled, parallel design and completed with a total of 62 individuals who were diagnosed with metabolic syndrome according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria. Participants were randomized into two groups and received daily 180 ml of kefir (n=31) or milk (as control) (n=31) for 12 weeks. Participants were assessed at baseline, week 4, week 8, and week 12 and at all controls dietary records, anthropometric measurements, and blood samples were collected. At baseline and 12th-week fecal samples were also collected in order to analyze gut microbiota composition.

Marin Protein Hydrolysate and Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic Syndrome

Overweight and obesity are increasing global health problems and the most important contributors to morbidity and mortality. The maintenance of long-term weight loss is difficult, and individuals often regain weight after an intervention program is finished. It is of interest to find ways to prevent and alleviate metabolic syndrome (MetS), beyond the known effects of lifestyle modification and weight loss. Fish has been proposed as a food that may have favorable effects on metabolic health. There is evidence that cod, and other marine fish, may contain bioactive peptides that have potentially important health effects in humans. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of adding a marine protein hydrolysate (MPH) supplement to the diet over an 8-week period in a group of adults with established MetS. The investigators expect that this will lead to beneficial changes in the components of MetS and to an overall healthier metabolic profile.

Metabolic Syndrome

The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) is increasing all over the world, which is largely related to the increasing obesity population and the current inactive lifestyle of human beings. It is a common problem facing public health and clinical practice.Metabolic syndrome is an accumulation of biologically metabolic risk factors related to cardiovascular disease and diabetes, including glucose metabolism disorders, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and obesity (especially central obesity).Researchers believe that the common pathological basis of these manifestations is insulin resistance, which is generally considered to be a reduction in the biological effects of insulin compared with the normal biological effects of expected biological phenomena.Nowadays, there are more and more studies on insulin resistance in the world. We have known that age, poor living and eating habits, high blood fat, high blood sugar and stress all lead to insulin resistance. The researchers hope to reduce weight, reduce body fat rate, improve body fat distribution and insulin resistance, reverse abnormal metabolic indicators, and ultimately reduce the incidence of chronic diseases in patients with metabolic syndrome through the intervention of lifestyle and diet habits in the early stage of the disease.

The Effect of Metabolic Syndrome on Antiviral Response in People With Chronic Hepatitis B

Chronic Hepatitis b

Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) affects an estimated 292 million people, and causes approximately 800,000 people deaths per year from liver-related complications including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, remaining a major global public health issue.Meanwhile, the rising incidence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) is another grim health burden. Combined MetS affects the metabolic function of hepatocytes, which are responsible for providing HBV replication. Antiviral therapy is an effective measure to reduce the risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer in patients with chronic CHB. Combined MetS may affect the antiviral efficacy in patients with CHB.This prospective observational study examines the differences in HBeAg serological conversion rates between HBeAg-positive CHB patients with and without MS who received first-line oral antivirals for 144 weeks.

Effect of Blueberry Consumption on Metabolic Syndrome & DNA Damage

Metabolic SyndromeInsulin Resistance1 more

Obesity usually brings with it disturbances in the body that increase the chances of developing serious diseases like diabetes and cancer. These disturbances include one or more symptoms of a condition called "metabolic syndrome" that often leads to diabetes. High levels of damage to the DNA that makes up our chromosomes have also been observed in obese people. It is possible that these two disturbances are connected. The goal of this project is to test this whether consumption of blueberries will improve these abnormalities.

Effects of Selective Inhibition of Cholesterol Absorption With Ezetimibe on Intestinal Cholesterol...

Metabolic Syndrome X

Ezetimibe has been shown to inhibit cholesterol absorption and several lines of evidence from in vitro systems and animal models suggest that this effect is associated with an increase in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor expression in the small intestine. The impact of a treatment with ezetimibe on intestinal gene expression and protein mass levels of LDL receptor and other key genes involved in intestinal cholesterol homeostasis will be examined in dyslipidemic men with insulin-resistance. In the present study, gene expression studies and protein mass levels will be assessed on duodenal biopsies by real-time polymerase chain reaction (rt-PCR) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), respectively. The primary objective of this proposal is to examine the effects of ezetimibe on intestinal gene expression (rt-PCR) and protein mass levels (LC-MS/MS) of LDL receptor in dyslipidemic men with insulin-resistance. The secondary objective is to examine the impact of ezetimibe treatment on intestinal gene expression and protein mass levels of sterol regulatory element-binding protein (SREBP)-2, Niemann-Pick C1-Like1 (NPC1L1), ATP binding cassette gene (ABCG)-5/8, proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) and 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-CoA (HMG CoA) reductase. Primary hypothesis Treatment with ezetimibe 10 mg/day will significantly increase duodenal mRNA and protein mass levels of LDL receptor in dyslipidemic men with insulin-resistance. Secondary hypothesis Treatment with ezetimibe 10 mg/day will significantly increase duodenal mRNA and protein mass levels of SREBP-2, NPC1L1, ABCG5/8, PCSK9 and HMG CoA reductase in dyslipidemic men with insulin-resistance.
