Magnesium and Metabolic Syndrome

Diabetes MellitusHigh Blood Pressure1 more

Objective : to test the BP lowering-effect of oral magnesium supplementation, as magnesium chloride (MgCl2) solution, 2.5 g daily, in uncomplicated hypertensive type 2 diabetic subjects with decreased serum magnesium levels Design : Randomised double blind placebo controlled trial. Setting : Outpatients with type 2 diabetes from Durango, city in northern Mexico Subjects : 82 subjects between 40 and 75 years of age with type 2 diabetes serum magnesium deficiency and uncomplicated hypertension. Interventions : During 4 months the intervention group received 2.5 gr of magnesium chloride (50 ml of a solution containing 50 gr of MgCl2 by 1000 ml of solution ). Controls received inert placebo. Main outcome measure: Change in blood pressure. Increase of serum magnesium Secondary outcomes measures: Changes in lipid profile

Surgical Removal of Visceral Fat Tissue (Omentectomy) Associated to Bariatric Surgery: Effects on...

Insulin ResistanceObesity1 more

The intraabdominal fat is associated with insulin resistance, a condition that is in the basis of diabetes, metabolic syndrome and some cardiovascular diseases. It is not clear whether it is the origin of it or a surrogate marker only. We intend to compare the effects of bariatric surgery with versus without omentectomy in morbidly obese people intended to go through bariatric surgery, accessing insulin sensitivity by metabolic tests. If the visceral fat is causative of insulin resistance, its surgical removal (omentectomy) might lead to improvement of insulin action, as seen in animal studies and in one study with morbidly obese human volunteers.

Do Antidepressants Induce Metabolic Syndromes METADAP Study

Major Depressive Disorder

Since antidepressants and antipsychotics have common receptorial mechanisms of action (H1 antagonism, 5HT2 antagonism), the impact of antidepressants in terms of metabolic syndromes is a matter of concern. The main objective of this study is to assess the differential impact of antidepressants in terms of weight gain and metabolic syndromes.

Bioavailability and Biological Effects of Vitamin D2 Contained in Mushroom

Vitamin D DeficiencyMetabolic Syndrome1 more

The purpose of this study is to compare the safety and efficacy of two different amounts of vitamin D2 (600 or 4000 International Units/day) provided by mushrooms added to one of the daily meals versus same doses of vitamin D3 provided as oral supplements sold in any drugstore in reaching adequate or optimal blood levels of 25(OH)D in people with Vitamin D deficiency and pre-diabetes (high blood sugar without full blown diabetes) or the metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is the name of a group of risk factors that raise the risk for heart disease and other health problems, such as diabetes and stroke as described by the US department of Health and Human Services. This study will also attempt to demonstrate and compare the effect of the intervention with above two doses of vitamin D on blood levels of tests that show inflammation.

Effects of TNF-alpha Antagonism (Etanercept) in Patients With the Metabolic Syndrome and Psoriasis...

PsoriasisMetabolic Syndrome3 more

People with psoriasis have significantly higher rates of obesity, diabetes, heart failure and high blood pressure than the general public. The purpose of this study is to determine how substances produced in the fat (inflammatory markers) relate to the risk of heart disease in people with the metabolic syndrome and psoriasis. People with metabolic syndrome have insulin resistance, increased waist size, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.
