High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) Functionality in Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic Syndrome X

The aim of the study is to examine the kinetic, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and cellular cholesterol efflux properties of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) in subjects with the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and lean individuals.

Changes in Different Fat Compartments and Their Effect on Particular Manifestations of Metabolic...

Morbid ObesityMetabolic Syndrome1 more

The metabolic risks associated with obesity are closely correlated with central (abdominal), rather than a peripheral (gluteofemoral) fat pattern It has been shown that weight loss after bariatric surgery is followed by metabolic improvements. The amount of fat lost from each site may be independently regulated. Very scant information is found in the literature regarding the relative changes in different fat body compartments, and their effect on the improvement of the metabolic profile. In this study we define the absolute and relative changes in the different adipose tissue compartment after weight loss surgery

Metabolic Syndrome Cohort in Korea

Metabolic Syndrome

Patients with metabolic syndrome living in Seoul area are included in this prospective registry for more than 10 years. All enrolled patients undergo thorough medical history survey. Enrolled patients will have coronary CT, 2D echocardiogram, treadmill test, pulse wave velocity, augmentation index, carotid intima-media thickness, and abdominal fat mass evaluation. Moreover, lipid profiles and inflammatory markers such as hsCRP, IL-6, TNF-alpha, VCAM-1, ICAM-1, adiponectin, MMP-9 will be measured. All participants will repeat the test and survey every year in Korea University Hospital.

Blood Cell Response to Exercise

Metabolic Syndrome

Moderate exercise is recommended to improve cardiovascular health in obese and overweight people particularly with metabolic syndrome (MetS) that have hypertension, elevated fasting blood sugar, and elevated blood lipids. This study is being done to determine how platelets respond when a person performs an initial period of moderate exercise.

The Monocyte Subsets in Obese Patients With and Without Metabolic Syndrome

ObesityMetabolic Syndrome

Obesity is associated with a chronic low-grade inflammation characterized by macrophage infiltration in adipose tissue that induces insulin resistance and the appearance of metabolic syndrome (MS). The aim of the study was the investigation of whether circulating monocyte subsets are differentially regulated in MS.

The SEEA (SCI Energy Expenditure and Activity) Study

Spinal Cord InjuriesObesity3 more

People with SCI are at higher risk of obesity and chronic diseases, such as hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, than the general population. Researchers currently lack data on factors that influence weight gain among people with SCI. During this one-year observational study, study staff will enroll 60 individuals with SCI while they are inpatients at Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation (BSWIR). Data will be collected at 3 time periods (before discharge and 6 and 12 months after discharge) in order to better understand factors that affect weight gain over the first 12 months following discharge from inpatient rehabilitation, such as nutritional intake, environmental access, psychosocial factors, energy requirements and risk factors for metabolic syndrome. These data will be used to inform future interventions for people with SCI.

The Impact of Placental Factors on Fetal Intrauterine Growth and in Intrauterine Programming of...

Normal Pregnancies

Genetic and environmental factors are believed to play a major role in intrauterine growth and intrauterine programming. We intend to study genetic factors such as Telomere homeostasis, senescence, genomic instability and the presence of Genomic copy number variations in placental tissue from pregnancies complicated with Intrauterine growth restriction(IUGR), Gestational and pre gestational Diabetes, placentas from IVF pregnancies and from normal pregnancies. We also intend to assess these factors in cord blood and maternal blood.
