The Effects of Weight Loss on Neuroadrenergic Function
ObesityType 2 Diabetes1 moreElevated subconscious nervous system activity is a characteristic of the obese state and contributes importantly to the risk of heart disease and diabetes. This project will compare sympathetic nervous system activity and function in a group of obese persons with differing levels of sugar tolerance (normal, impaired and type 2 diabetic). Inter-relationships with insulin action, blood pressure, heart and kidney function will be determined before and after a 4-month weight loss and 3-month weight loss maintenance program. It is hypothesized that the transition from normal sugar tolerance to impaired sugar tolerance to type 2 diabetes will be accompanied by escalating sympathetic nervous system dysfunction. Furthermore, that weight loss will favorably improve sympathetic function, with greatest benefits occurring in those subjects who are insulin resistant with high blood insulin concentration.
Energy Balance and Inflammation in Obese Adults Bariatric Surgery Follow-up
ObesityMorbid Obesity3 moreThe prevalence of obesity is steadily growing in many parts of the world in order to reach epidemic proportions. Changes in signaling pathways state of hunger and satiety contribute to the increase in obesity and metabolic syndrome. Currently, the white adipose tissue, also is considered a secretory tissue by producing numerous adipokines involved in a chronic state of inflammation, which may interfere with the neuroendocrine regulation of energy balance that affect the weight loss process. The bariatric surgery is recommended as the most effective tool in the treatment and control of morbid obesity. The study population will consist of patients undergoing bariatric surgery of type Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. The study was performed in Clinical Hospital of the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR). This is a prospective cohort study with follow up of 6 and 24 months. The aim of this study is to assess the effects of weight loss after bariatric surgery associated anthropometric characteristic, metabolic changes (glucose, cholesterol profile, hepatic enzymes, Fibroblast growth factor- 21(FGF-21), blood pressure), the profile of adipokines pro/anti-inflammatory (adiponectin, interleukin-6 (IL-6),interleukin-10 (IL-10), C reactive protein (CRP), plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), resistin, frizzled-related protein 5 (SFrp5) and neuroendocrine regulation of energy balance (leptin, neuropeptide Y (NPY) , alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH), melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) and agouti-related peptide (AgRP), as well as the quality of life in obese adults.

The Effect of Supplementation of Flaxseed, Hesperidin, Flaxseed and Hesperidin Together in Metabolic...
Metabolic SyndromeTo study the effects of Hesperidin, flaxseed and both together in patients with metabolic syndrome, 100 patients will be randomly allocated to one of following four groups: control group, hesperidin group (2 capsules Hesperidin), flaxseed group (30 gram flaxseed) or flaxseed-hesperidin group (2 capsules Hesperidin and 30 gram flaxseed) for 12 weeks; both groups will be advised to adherence the investigators' diet and exercise program too. At the first and the end of the intervention, metabolic factors will be assessed and compared between groups.
Motivational Approach to Treat Childhood Obesity
Childhood ObesityMetabolic Syndrome1 moreThe treatment of childhood obesity is challenging. Although dietary and physical activity recommendations are widely known, the willingness to change lifestyles within the family is not easy to be achieved. Motivational interviewing has been shown as a possibly effective method to increase adherence to dietary recommendations in the obese adult. There is scarce evidence showing whether implementing a motivational interview in obese children could be effective. The aim of this clinical trial is assessing the effect of a motivational interview, coordinated between the clinical and primary care services on 8 to 14 years old obese children.
Efect of Quinoa and Flaxseed in Cititoxicity and Glicemic Control in Metabolic Syndrome Patients...
Metabolic SyndromeNutritional and Metabolic DiseasesThe Metabolic Syndrome (MS) is a set of anthropometric alterations and chronic-degenerative diseases, such as obesity, diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension. Each one of the diseases and physiological alterations represents a risk factor that conditions in the medium or long term another incapacitating or limiting disease that reduces the quality of life of an individual. Our country has a growing burden of morbidity and mortality due to diseases chronic-degenerative caused, for the most part, to the unhealthy lifestyle produced by multiple factors, such as social, economic, behavioral, environmental, among others. For this reason, it is important to plan, design and implement strategies that reduce, mitigate or control this public health problem in the population. The purpose of this study is to perform a nutritional intervention that includes food such as quinoa, flaxseed or both in subjects with metabolic syndrome and follow them up for six months. The impact of this intervention will be carried out through the measurement of cytotoxicity and glycemic control, this is with the micronucleus count and the estimation of glycosylated hemoglobin (Hba1c). This document will explain in detail what is intended to be done by presenting the following sections: In the approach of the problem and the justification, the metabolic syndrome will be described, its impact on the Mexican population, the interest and relevance of this research project. In the background will be detailed what has been said and done in the different studies scientists regarding the consumption of quinoa and flaxseed. Methodology defines the strategy, conditions, clinical criteria, material and epidemiological and statistical methods for the management of subjects and information.
Probiotics and Systemic Inflammation in Patients With Metabolic Syndrome and High Cardiovascular...
Metabolic SyndromeCardiovascular Risk FactorMetabolic Syndrome (MetS) and cardiovascular disease are associated with systemic inflammation (SI). Activation of the mechanisms of inflammation is triggered by the inflammatory cytokines. Τhe NLRP3 inflammasome is activated by microbial-derived low molecular weight (LMW) factors, short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), pathogen-associated molecular pattern molecules (PAMPs), damage-associated molecular pattern molecules (DAMPs), and monosodium urate crystals. Probiotics can regulate inflammation in two ways: 1) indirectly, by producing SCFAs as well as increasing synthesis of antimicrobial peptides and 2) directly, by binding innate immune system receptors Toll-like (TLR 2, 4, 9) and triggering important signaling pathways associated with activation of NLRs affecting the formation of inflammasome, thus the inflammatory response.
The S.L.I.M.M.S. Procedure for Severe Clinical Obesity
Morbid ObesityMetabolic Syndrome2 moreAssessment of Gastric Bypass combined with Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy as primary treatment for patients with severe clinical obesity. Average percentage of total weight loss and percentage excess weight loss will be computed at 6 months, one year and then annually. Comorbid conditions, quality of life measures, appetite and satiety measures and adverse events will be tracked.
Effect of Metabolic Syndrome on Outcomes of Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injection Treatment...
Herniated Disk LumbarMetabolic SyndromeTransforaminal epidural steroid injection (TFESI) has been increasingly preferred in patients who can not benefit from conservative approach in the treatment of lumbosacral radiculopathic pain due to lumbar disc herniation. The aim of our study is to evaluate the effect of metabolic syndrome on the treatment results of transforaminal epidural steroid injection in patients with chronic radicular low back pain due to lumbar disc herniation.
A Randomized Controlled Trial of Effects of DAIry PROtein Products on Liver Disease Severity and...
Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver DiseaseMetabolic Syndrome7 moreThe overarching aim of this project is to investigate effects of dietary interventions on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) severity and to delineate the relationship with improvements in metabolic aberrations in liver-, fat- and muscle tissue, using a panel of state-of-the art techniques. The investigators will conduct a randomized clinical trial with three arms to investigate if micellar cassein isolate and whey protein supplementation as part of a high-protein diet during 4 weeks of weight maintenance and 20 weeks of hypocaloric intake (30% energy restriction) inducing modest weight loss (5% of baseline weight) has beneficial effects on NAFLD severity and metabolic aberrations compared to normal diet in NAFLD patients. It is hypothesized that: (i) a high-protein diet improves liver disease severity and metabolic function compared to a normal protein diet; (ii) Cassein provides greater benefits than whey; and(iii) these effects manifest during both weight maintenance and weight loss.
