Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is a condition characterized by excess body weight, large waist circumference, high cholesterol and glucose in the blood, and hypertension. People with metabolic syndrome are at increased risk for heart diseases. Research shows benefits of regular fiber intake in metabolic syndrome. However, due to altered taste and texture of the high fiber foods, long term intake of fiber is a challenge for metabolic syndrome patients. This study is designed to find if blinded-substitution of regular wheat flour in domestic kitchen with wheat flour enriched by an adaptable type of fiber (resistant starch-4), minimizes metabolic syndrome symptoms. this special type of fiber is also obtained from wheat.

The study was a 12-month, multi-centered, quasi-experimental design to assess point-of-care (POCT) screening/monitoring of subjects on antipsychotic agents for metabolic syndrome. Subjects were also randomized to either an Extended Treatment Group (ETG) defined by receiving comprehensive medication management (CMM) pharmacist interventions or a Usual Treatment Group (UTG) receiving no CMM interventions. All subjects were recruited from three community mental health clinic settings in Minnesota.

Reduction of Sweetened Beverages and Intrahepatic Fat

The study will enroll 68 overweight male and female subjects with a high (> 2 3dl-can soda/day) consumption of sweetened beverage per day. After a run-in period of 4 weeks, subjects will be randomized to either a 12-week intervention arm in which sweetened beverages will be replaced by artificially sweetened, calorie-free beverages, or to a control arm. The following measurements will be performed at the end of the run-in period and at the end of the intervention period intrahepatic fat concentration visceral fat volume changes in day-long metabolic profile from baseline(plasma glucose, insulin, and triglyceride concentrations) changes in food intake and daily energy, carbohydrate and sugars intake from baseline

The study project can be divided into two parts: (1) health screening for the community and (2) clinical diagnosis and treatment for patients at National Referral Hospital (NRH) in Solomon islands. The health screening includes a questionnaire, stool parasitic screening and blood laboratory tests. A total of 800 subjects will participate in this study. The collected samples are venous blood (20 ml/per subject) and stool in order to conduct the related tests mentioned above. As for the collection of target patients, KMUH will cooperate with NRH to collect two kinds of blood samples: the blood samples of confirmed malarial cases and those of cases suspicious of Flaviviral, Alpha-viral, Rickettsial, and Leptospiral infections. The expected received cases are 600 each year. The venous blood samples (20 ml/per subject) will be used to conduct related tests mentioned above. At the same time, the subjects will also have to fill out a related questionnaire which includes height, weight, waist line, heath behavior and habit, and past history, etc.

Prolonged sitting is a common behavior in contemporary humans. In epidemiological studies, increased sitting time has been associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. Recent research has also shown that interrupting sitting time with standing prevents the poorer glycemic control. However, studies are lacking which evaluate the impact of low intensity physical activity during prolonged sitting on vascular function. Whether low intensity physical activity can increase blood flow substantially and prevent impairment in vascular function and glycemic control is unknown. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate whether increased blood flow during sitting via low intensity physical activity (fidgetting) prevents the impairment in vascular function and poorer glycemic control associated with prolonged sitting.

Effects of Peppermint Oil in Cardiometabolic Outcomes

Cardiometabolic Syndrome

Cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus and associated diseases combined are the leading health burden and cause of mortality worldwide; therefore, the necessity for an intervention is paramount. Dietary interventions to improve cardiometabolic health are highly sought after as they possess less risk than pharmacological drugs. Previous non-randomized interventions have shown that oral peppermint may be beneficial in improving cardiometabolic outcomes. However, to date, no research has explored this using a placebo randomized intervention. Therefore, the primary purpose of the proposed investigation is to test the ability of oral peppermint oil supplementation to improve cardiometabolic parameters in healthy individuals.
