Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

The purpose of this survey is to determine the onset of new cerebral and cardiovascular events and changes in metabolic syndrome parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus on long-term pioglitazone (Actos Tablets) treatment.

Neck Fat Accumulation and Its Relationship to Cardiovascular Risk and Metabolic Syndrome

Obesity

Accumulation of fat in the neck using tape measures has been linked to increased cardiovascular risk. The investigators' hypothesis is that detailed measures of neck fat using computed tomography will show that specific fat compartments in the neck contribute differently to cardiovascular risk.

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and Cardiometabolic Syndrome in Offspring

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) has long been known as leading to macrosomias, neonatal hypoglycemias and other complications which are treatable and preventable. Nowadays, GDM is recognized as an entity with long-term serious sequels to the mother (GDM is considered a forerunner of type 2 diabetes) and her offspring. Indeed, according to the programming hypothesis, GDM sets the stage for metabolic syndrome, obesity, type 2 diabetes and hypertension. However, these cross-sectional studies failed to control for maternal disease history and genetic background although heredity is a major epidemiology risk factor of type 2 diabetes. Also, studies usually refer to traditional markers such as BMI, blood pressure, lipids profile and oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT); none explored inflammatory biomarkers and adipokines in-depth, despite the possible link between their presence and the development of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases in GDM offsprings. Exclusion of genetic confounding factors will help establish the role of GDM as an independent marker of cardiometabolic risk in GDM offspring. It is highly relevant to identify GDM as a risk factor for cardiometabolic diseases, given the worldwide obesity epidemic, the alarming prevalence increase of GDM and its serious sequels to both mother and offspring.

Genetic Counseling and Lifestyle Change for Diabetes Prevention

Pre-diabetesOverweight1 more

This study will examine the impact diabetes genetic counseling on patient motivation and disease prevention behaviors among subjects with pre-diabetes. Intervention subjects will be provided with their individual diabetes genotype risk score derived from aggregating the combined results of 37 diabetes risk-associated genetic loci. Controls will not be tested. All subjects will be enrolled in a 12-week diabetes prevention program.

Klinefelter SyndromeDiabetes3 more

Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is the most common sex-chromosome disorder with a prevalence of one in 660 men and is a frequent cause of hypogonadism and infertility. It is caused by the presence of extra X-chromosomes, the most common karyotype being 47,XXY. The phenotype is variable, but the most constant finding is small hyalinized testes, hypergonadotrophic hypogonadism, infertility, eunuchoid body proportion, increased height and learning disabilities. Klinefelter syndrome has been associated with increased prevalence of diabetes, osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases but the pathogenesis is unknown. Accordingly the aim of the study was to investigate measures of body composition, insulin sensitivity, bone mineral density, echocardiography, as well as biochemical markers of endocrine, metabolic and bone function in KS and an age-matched control group.

Metabolic Syndrome as Prognostic Factor for Outcome of Sever SARS-COV-2 Cases.

COVID-19

SARS-COV-2 crisis is a severe public health concern in the world. It is now well recognized that older age, diabetes mellitus, obesity (BMI > 30 kg/m2), and hypertension increase the risk of complications and death in SARS-COV-2 patients. This study will describe the spectrum of clinical features, the likely pathophysiologic mechanisms, and potential implications for the management of metabolic syndrome in SARS-COV-2 patients.

Pilot Study of Metabolic Syndromes and HIV Infections in Indian Tibetans

Metabolic SyndromesHIV Infection

Kaohsiung Medical University Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital will provide a long-term free medical service in Indian Tibetans since July 2010. The investigators plan to investigate metabolic syndromes and HIV infection in Indian Tibetan community. The investigators will survey the prevalence and risk factors by means of HIV quick test and questionnaires. Since there is lacking of prevalence survey for metabolic syndrome and HIV infection in Tibetan colony of India, the investigiators will carry out this survey under the support and assistance of Department of Health of Central Tibetan Government.
