Comparison of the Prophylactic Effect Between Acupuncture and Acupressure on Menstrual Migraine...

Menstrual Migraine

This study is designed to make comparisons between acupuncture and acupressure for preventing menstrual migraine (MM). Whether acupuncture is superior to acupressure is the most interesting point of this study. First of all, females will be screened for eligibility. Then, all participants who meet the inclusion criteria will be asked to keep a headache migraine diary for three months as baseline data. The diaries will then be collected before the first treatment. Then, all the participants will receive the corresponding interventions on the eighth, fifth and second days before the estimated first day of menstruation (determined individually from the diaries) in each month for three months (menstrual cycle), making a total of nine treatment sessions. After the whole treatments, there will be a three-month follow-up period. All the participants will be asked to complete the headache diaries every month from baseline to the end of the study. The diaries recording data from the fourth to the ninth month will then be collected at the end of the ninth month for the second time indicating the end of the study for the participants. In case of an acute migraine attack, participants will not be restricted from using "normal" medications.

Effect on Migraine Frequency of Combined Anti-oxidant Therapy: The MIGRANT Study.

Migraine affects 15% of Western Australians and is a leading cause of suffering and disability in our community (1,2). Research suggests that inflammation of the brain's coverings (meninges) by nerve cell inflammation and the release of 'free radicals', is a cause of migraine. N-acetylcysteine, Vitamin E and Vitamin C are powerful anti-oxidants (free-radical scavengers) that reduce brain inflammation and nerve activity. It is therefore possible these anti-oxidants could reduce the number and severity of migraines. We will study 90 subjects to see if a combination of N-acetylcysteine 600 mg, Vitamin E 250 IU and vitamin C 500 mg (NEC) taken twice daily for 3 months, will reduce migraine attacks. This safe vitamin-based therapy has never been studied and if effective, will play an important role in migraine prevention.

Clinical Experience With Transcutaneous Supraorbital Nerve Stimulation in Refractory Migraine

Migraine is included in the top-ten disabling diseases and conditions among the Western populations. Non-invasive neurostimulation (t-SMS), including the Cefaly® device, for the treatment of various types of pain is a relatively new field of interest. The aim of the present study was to explore the clinical experience with Cefaly® in a cohort of migraine patients previously refractory or non-tolerant to topiramate prophylaxis. Patients were followed prospectively after having been diagnosed with episodic or chronic migraine with a previous failure to topiramate treatment and having consented to receive preventive treatment with Cefaly® according to their treating physician's suggestion. A 1-month period of baseline observation was followed by a 3-month period of active treatment with transcutaneous supraorbital nerve stimulation (t-SNS) with Cefaly® as the only preventive treatment.

Migraine is a highly disabling disorder that affects hundreds of millions of people around the world. Yet, a little number of prophylactic treatments are available still now. The limited number of available drugs leads to a wide use of nutraceutical compounds in migraine therapy. To improve the efficacy, some of these nutraceuticals were combined. So far, we do not know if these combinations are really more effective than the single compounds alone, or an anti-synergic effect could be present because of a reciprocal antagonism of effects. For this reason, we decided to test the efficacy of a fixed combination of magnesium, partenium, andrographis, co-enzyme Q10 and riboflavin (PACR) as prophylactic treatment for migraine in a randomized controlled double blind study.

To characterize auditory deficits after brain damage or in migraine, neuropsychological assessments are combined with neurophysiological markers (Electro-encephalography: EEG, Magneto-encephalography: MEG, Magnetic Resonance Imaging: MRI).

Brainstem Grey Matter and Cerebral Autoregulation in Migraine With Aura.

Migraine With Aura

Migraine with aura (MA) is an independent risk factor for stroke and is associated with silent brain infracts and T2 white matter hyperintensities on MRI. Previous studies using Transcranial Doppler (TCD) have shown an impairment of cerebral autoregulation in MA patients. Studies with positron emission tomography have demonstrated an activation of brain stem areas during migraine attack. An increased density of brain stem grey matter as measured on MRI with voxel based morphometry (VBM) has been found in MA patients. As brain arteries and arterioles are innervated by ascending tracts from aminergic brainstem nuclei, th study hypothesize a negative correlation between the density of brainstem nuclei and the efficiency of cerebral autoregulation in MA patients compared with controls. Brainstem grey matter density will be studied with a MRI Philips 3 Tesla with a 32-channel antenna and voxel-based morphometry (VBM) cerebral autoregulation will be measured in the time domain using Transcranial Doppler (TCD) and the Mx method. MA patients will be studied in a headache-free period. MRI and Transcranial Doppler (TCD) are non-invasive technics and will be performed on the same day.
