Basophil Activation Test to Diagnose Food Allergy

Food AllergyFood Allergy in Infants5 more

The BAT II Study is a cross-sectional diagnostic study in which children with suspected IgE-mediated allergy to foods (namely cow's milk, egg, sesame and cashew), as defined by a history of an immediate-type allergic reaction to a food or no history of food consumption or the presence of food-specific IgE as documented by skin prick test or serum specific IgE, will undergo a diagnostic work-up to confirm or refute the diagnosis of IgE-mediated food allergy. Participants will be prospectively recruited from specialised Paediatric Allergy clinics in London and will undergo skin prick testing (SPT), specific IgE testing to allergen extracts and allergen components, basophil activation test (BAT) and oral food challenge. The diagnostic accuracy of the BAT and of other allergy tests will be assessed against the clinical gold-standard.

The Effect of Early Cow's Milk Elimination Diet on the Growth Pattern

Cow Milk Allergy

This study aimed to survey the growth of children who were on elimination diet due to cow milk allergy in Turkey. 0-5 year aged children diagnosed with cow's milk allergy (CMA) and healthy age-sex-matched children as the control group was planned for inclusion. Participants will be included in the study by consecutive sampling. The anthropometry measurements (height-for-age [HFA], weight-for-age [WFA], and weight-for-height [WtHt]) will be evaluated according to the Z-score using the WHO ANTHRO [Z-score = Patient's value - Average value / Standard Deviation (SD)]. The Z-score (SDS) in the average child by age was "0".

Oral Tolerance in Cow's Milk Allergy in the Infant

Cow's Milk Allergy

This study aims to determine if there is a link between cow's milk allergy in infants and regulatory T cells dysfunction that should be transient in infant acquiring oral tolerance after 12 month avoiding food and persistent in others. Cow's milk allergy is evaluated by basophils activation test, T cells activation test, specific humoral response (IgA, IgE, IgG) in allergic infants before and after 12 month avoiding food, before and after low dose milk exposure, before and after oral challenge. Number and function of regulatory T cells and microflora composition are measured at the same time. Allergic infants are compared to age matched control group.

Microbiota as Potential Target for Food Allergy

Cow Milk Allergy

Food allergy (FA) derives from a dysregulation of oral tolerance mechanisms. Studies suggest a crucial role for enteric microflora in oral tolerance development. An altered composition of intestinal microflora results in an unbalanced local and systemic immune response to food allergens. There are qualitative and quantitative differences in gut microbiota composition in children with food allergy. These findings support the concept that specific beneficial bacteria from human intestinal microflora, designated probiotics, could restore intestinal microflora homeostasis and prevent or treat FA.
