The purpose of this study is to measure daily mood changes and to find out whether these mood changes are related to the ability to maintain attention on a task. Problems with mood are more common among women however, the association between symptoms of alcohol abuse and mood syndromes is inconsistent. First we hypothesize that women with lifetime diagnoses of alcohol abuse will not demonstrate higher symptoms of anxiety, depression, neuroticism and mood variability than control groups. Second, that the severity of these symptoms will not correlate with performance on measures of sustained attention.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not spiritual and/or religious commitment affects mood variability and thoughts of suicide. First we hypothesize that among patients with depressive symptoms, those who have higher religious/spiritual (R/S) commitment will have less suicidal ideation and less mood variability. Second, we hypothesize that higher mood variability will be associated with more suicidal ideation. Finally, dependent on the first two hypotheses, we propose that R/S commitment will mediate the relationship between mood variability and suicidal ideation.

The investigators will aim to determine the association of mood disorders (MDO) with preclinical and clinical cardiovascular (CVD) risk factors among children. The investigators will also aim to identify traditional and non traditional predictors of CVD risk among children with MDO.

The Mobile Mood Tracking App study is a small randomized trial of acceptability and usability of a mobile phone mood tracking application (mobile app) among women with depressed mood in pregnancy. The study will be assessing the perceived value and usability of this tool in pregnancy over eight weeks to test whether women using this app are more likely to receive assessments and treatments of depressed mood than women not using it.

The purpose of this study to evaluate peer-led mutual help organizations (MHOs) that target individuals with psychiatric diagnoses such as mood disorders, and provide evidence either supporting the expansion of such groups and the development and testing of clinical procedures, or point toward reevaluation and development of alternative low-cost, community based approaches to promoting recovery among individuals suffering from these disorders.

Objective: Reports have described how hospitalized psychiatric patients respond to disasters; however, few reports have described the response to disaster among psychiatric outpatients, who have relatively mild disease in comparison with hospitalized, severely ill psychiatric patients. Here the investigators have analyzed the response to disaster among this under-studied population. Method: The Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, was a catastrophic disaster. The investigators studied psychiatric change among a population of psychiatric outpatients in Tochigi prefecture, located ~160 km (~100 miles) southeast of the Fukushima nuclear power plant, in an area that suffered moderate damage from the earthquake. A total of 328 psychiatric outpatients were enrolled and were grouped into the diagnostic categories F2 (schizophrenic, schizotypal, and delusional disorders), F3 (affective disorders), and F4 (neurotic, stress-related, and somatoform disorders). All diagnoses were made using International Classification of Diseases (ICD) 10 criteria. Changes in symptoms were measured as a change in psychotropic medication after the disaster.

Complex Dynamic Systems in Mood Disorders is an observational, exploratory study of the relationship between voice samples, heart rate, respiration, movement, galvanic skin conductance, and sleep architecture with mood states in patients with Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, and healthy controls. The overall hypothesis is that nonlinear dynamic analyses will be able to reveal hidden patterns of complexity in each domain of voice, heart rate variability, movement, arousal, and sleep stage data.

The purpose of this study is to examine whether tobacco smoking is associated with bipolar affective disorder (severity of depressive and manic symptoms, presence of psychotic symptoms, history of a suicide attempts and other clinical features.)

The aim of the following pilot study is to examine boredom in a community sample of adolescents and a clinical sample of adolescents. This is important in order to examine differences among healthy adolescents and adolescents with mental illness.

This research protocol seeks to learn more about bipolar disorder in children and adolescents ages 6-17. Researchers will describe the moods and behaviors of children with bipolar disorder and use specialized testing and brain imaging to learn about specific brain changes associated with the disorder. This protocol studies children who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and those who have a sibling or parent with bipolar disorder and are thus considered "at risk" for developing the disorder.
