Oral DiseaseBacterial DiseaseThe prevalence of tooth decay and other oral diseases are overlooked indicators of overall public health. To improve the understanding of oral health in El Paso, the City of El Paso Health Department will work with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso to determine factors that contribute to poor oral health, and lead to cavities and periodontitis. The team will collect saliva from children and young adults to study oral infections, markers of inflammation, and other contributors to oral illnesses in Mexican-American individuals.

Recent neurophysiologic study results suggest that a primary burning mouth disorder (BMD) may be a peripheral and/or a central neuropathic disorder. The aim of this study is to first identify patients with a primary burning mouth disorder by excluding other possible causes for oral burning. By means of qualitative and quantitative sensory testing and a gustatory examination in the individual patient the investigators want to find out whether neurosensory differences exist between patients with a primary BMD and controls and whether gustatory and neurosensory deficits always coexist in BMD-patients.

Assessment of Routine Oral Screening Programs for New Prisoners
Oral DiseaseIn 2018, 10 detention centers in France will start organisational programs to improve the quality of screening of oral diseases, relatively to French recommendations, among new prisoners in France. Our study aims 1) to assess the prevalence and nosology of oral diseases ; 2) to describe the care pathway of participants during their stay in the detention center where they were included ; 3) to assess the cost of care per patient, from a societal perspective, using a top-down method.
