Health Promotion and Wellness Program for Adults With Disabling Conditions

The objective of this study is to conduct a randomized controlled pilot study to examine the efficacy, feasibility and safety of the SystemCHANGE™(SC) health promotion and wellness program in adults with disabling conditions. Particularly, the study will focus on developing a program of research on adapting and testing SC weight management interventions in overweight and obese stroke survivors and persons with chronic inflammatory autoimmune/immune-mediated diseases, specifically those with multiple sclerosis (MS) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Promoting Physical Activity Behavior in Persons With Multiple Sclerosis

The purpose of this research study is to evaluate whether tailored print material can promote physical activity and exercise, and subsequently improve quality of life and fitness levels among people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Research suggests that routine physical activity is beneficial in people with mild to moderate MS. However, people with MS may face many barriers for engaging in regular physical activity. Prescribing a home exercise program and receiving tailored motivational print material may help people engage in physical activity. Thus, the investigators hope to figure out whether tailored print material can be used as strategy to promote physical activity and improve physical function in people with MS.

Cranberry for Prevention of Urinary Tract Infections in Multiple Sclerosis Patients

Bladder dysfunction occurs at some time in most patients with multiple sclerosis and these patients are prone to have recurrent urinary tract infections. Cranberry has been traditionally used for the treatment and prophylaxis of urinary tract infections but there is no reliable randomized controlled trial demonstrating evidence of cranberry's utility in this disease. The aim of our study is to assess the efficacy and safety of cranberry in the prophylaxis of urinary tract infections in patients with multiple sclerosis with a prospective randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled clinical trial.

Stress Management for Patients With Multiple Sclerosis

There is a growing body of literature showing that stressful life events can increase the risk of developing exacerbations and new brain lesions among people with multiple sclerosis. The purpose of this study is to examine the hypothesis that stress management programs can reduce the occurrence of new brain lesions and exacerbations. We will also examine potential immune and neuroendocrine pathways.

Study of Empathy in MS

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system whose exact etiology remains unclear, underpinned by multiple pathophysiological mechanisms, and is a cause of significant motor and cognitive disability. Some studies report a prevalence of 40% to 60% of cognitive impairment during the disease, and represents a major factor influencing quality of life in patients with MS. Cognitive impairment can affect one or more of the 6 cognitive functions, including social cognition and its three components: theory of mind, or an individual's ability to infer intention and other's behavior, empathy, and social perceptions and knowledge. To date, few studies have focused on the more specific study of empathy in MS. They seem to suggest the existence of a deficit but rely on small numbers of patients. There appear to be many confounding factors but their direct relationship to empathy is not clearly established: potentially related comorbidities, such as anxiety and depression that are frequently found in MS patients ; level of education and cognitive reserve; and finally the very characteristics of the disease. Indeed, data concerning relationship between empathy and the activity or stage of MS seem so far contradictory. Alexithymia, or inability to express feelings verbally, is a pathology close to empathy deficit, and can affect patients' daily lives in a similar way. Prevalence of alexithymia in MS patients has been shown to be higher than in general population, and its parallel study with empathy seems relevant. The aim of this study is to assess the level of empathy on a larger scale of MS population and to study various confounding factors known to influence the level of empathy, such as anxiety, depression, level of education but also the characteristics of the disease: its duration of evolution, its stage, its activity, and associated disability. The investigator team will conduct a prospective observational study in MS patients to assess their level of empathy versus a control population of healthy subjects and study the influence of these different variables.

Through this phase IV study, multicenter prospective exploratory, uncontrolled, the investigators propose to identify MRI predictive factors of treatment response, using diffusion MRI sequences, in addition to conventional sequences. The primary objective is to study the links between changes on MRI diffusion and response to treatment with Tysabri to 2 years. The secondary objective is to compare the evolution of diffusion MRI data with the volumetric MRI data.

Impact of Acute Leg Cycling at Various Intensities on RLS Severity in Persons With MS

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of acute leg cycling conditions at three different intensities versus a control condition condition on symptoms of restless legs syndrome (RLS) in persons with multiple sclerosis (MS). This study includes a proposed sample of 24 participants diagnosed with both MS and RLS that will complete four sessions of supervised exercise or rest conditions in the lab, one session per week, over the course of four weeks.

T Cell Profiling in Patients With Multiple Sclerosis

The goal of this research study is to to learn more about the body's immune response in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). In MS, the body's immune cells mistakenly attack an important part of the nerves of the brain and spinal cord. The immune cells responsible for attacking the nerves in MS patients is primarily the T cells. A marker was recently discovered that might specifically identify these damaging T cells from all other T cells in the body. Understanding which T cells cause the damage in MS patients and understanding more about these specific T cells may help doctors better understand how MS occurs and could possibly prevent MS in the future.

An Observational Study to Learn About the Interferon-beta Exposure of Pregnant Women During the...

Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Observational data have suggested no increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes associated with exposure to interferon-beta (IFNB) before or during pregnancy. After the emergence of these data, the European Medicines Agency approved a label change for IFNB in September 2019, stating that use of IFNB during pregnancy may be considered, if clinically needed. However, limited data on pregnancies exposed in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters were observed. INFORM is a secondary use of data drug utilisation study (DUS) to determine late pregnancy exposure (i.e. during the 2nd and 3rd trimester) to IFNB in Finland and Sweden, which will inform whether the number of exposed pregnancies is adequate to conduct a cohort study on adverse pregnancy outcomes, with a focus on late pregnancy exposure. The number of pregnancies will be initially reported three years after the revised label implementation (September 2019) and will include data on pregnancies from 1996 in Finland and from 2005 in Sweden up through 31 December 2022. If the number of pregnancies is deemed adequate for conducting the cohort study on adverse pregnancy outcomes, this DUS will be finalised with the drug utilisation data accrued up through 31 December 2022. If the number of pregnancies until 31 December 2022 is deemed inadequate, this study may be continued and the primary and secondary objectives may be examined five years after the revised label implementation, including pregnancies until 31 December 2024.
