Naloxone Education in Total Joint Patients

Opioid UsePain3 more

This study examines the efficacy of a brief pre-hospital naloxone education module added to the standard "Total Joint Class" curriculum on patient safety and experience. Participants will consist of 250 patient-and-support-person pairs. The primary outcome is "readiness to use" naloxone - a proxy for opioid overdose safety. Patient factors contributing to this primary outcome as well as the effect on patient attitude and experience will also be investigated.

The U.S. Embryologist Fatigue Study

FatigueStress13 more

The purpose of the study is to determine physical and mental health issues of U.S. embryologists related to their occupational characteristics, and how workplace fatigue and burnout may affect their quality of life, cynicism, interactions with patients, attention to detail, and lead to human error, the cause of the most severe IVF incidents that often make headlines and result in costly litigation. It will also correlate how the current manual workflows contribute to these health issues, and what measures can be taken to improve both working conditions and embryologists' health, and, therefore, improve patient care.

The Effect of State and Trait Anxiety on Pain-pressure Threshold

PainAnxiety2 more

The purpose of this research is to find out if different types of anxiety impact the sensation of how sensitive various muscles are to the application of pressure. This information can help researchers and healthcare providers better understand how people feel pain differently based on emotional factors This study is designed to study people who can be expected to have normal pain sensation processing

Change in Pain With Virtual Reality-augmented Remote Rehabilitative Care

Musculoskeletal Pain

Pain is among the most common chronic conditions in the adult population, often associated with decreased quality of life, functional impairments, increased medication use, increased medical expenditures, and significant economic costs. Due to the worsening opioid crisis, non-pharmacological approaches, such as rehabilitative care, are needed. However, access to in-person rehabilitative care may be limited due to transportation barriers, time constraints, and patient preference to remain at home. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated barriers to access in-person care, bringing the benefits of tele-rehabilitation into sharper focus. Remote models of care and novel treatment strategies, specifically the utilization of virtual reality (VR) augmented care are emerging as potentially viable treatment alternatives. This paper intends to explore the potential effectiveness of this method of care delivery in patients presenting for rehabilitative care with a primary complaint of pain.

Musculoskeletal Pain in Postmenopausal, Early Breast Cancer Patients Receiving Aromatase Inhibitor...

Breast Cancer

In 2005, the EBCIG demonstrated the efficacy of tamoxifen in improving overall survival in hormone receptor positive breast cancers. However, tamoxifen shows partial estrogen agonist activity, which is responsible for the drug's detrimental effects such as endometrial carcinoma, thromboembolism, and tamoxifen resistance. More recently, aromatase inhibitors have been shown to be superior to tamoxifen in the metastatic and adjuvant settings. The ATAC trial demonstrated improved disease-free survival (DFS) for 5 years of anastrozole compared to 5 years of tamoxifen 3. The BIG 1-98 trial results demonstrated that after a median follow-up of 25.8 months, letrozole improved DFS and distant DFS when compared to tamoxifen. Based on these results, adjuvant hormonal therapy with Aromatase Inhibitors (AI) has become the preferred therapy for post-menopausal woman. However, AI therapy is also associated with toxicities that merit in-depth studies, one of them being an increase in musculoskeletal pain. In the ATAC trial, at a median follow-up of 5.7 years, arthralgia was significantly higher (35.6% vs. 29.4%) and fractures were also increased (11.0% vs. 7.7%) when anastrozole was administered for 5 years following surgery with or without chemotherapy 3. The incidence of arthralgia was also significantly higher in the MA-17 trial, with 25% of patients receiving letrozole developing arthralgia compared with 21% in the placebo group following 5 to 6 years of tamoxifen 5. Traditionally in cancer clinical trials, the reporting of musculoskeletal pain has been based on the "Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events", which covers a wide range of symptoms and does not facilitate the documentation of a pain syndrome in a specific manner. Therefore, there is a need to design a study that will describe the nature of the pain associated with the administration of AI therapy using tools that have been validated for capturing a multidimensional phenomenon such as pain.

Factors Affecting Sleep Quality in Office Workers

SleepWork Related Stress4 more

This study will focus on the relationship between pillow and mattress factors, musculoskeletal disorders and sleep quality in office workers. Sleep is vital to physical and mental health, and poor sleep can negatively affect cognitive function and workplace performance. Office workers, who often work in sedentary jobs, are particularly prone to sleep disorders. Recognizing the factors that contribute to poor sleep in this population is crucial for developing interventions to improve sleep quality. The study used a cross-sectional design and will collect data from an appropriate sample of office workers (Approximately 600 participants). Various variables will be assessed, including sociodemographic characteristics, sleep-related factors (to be measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), pillow characteristics, mattress-related factors, musculoskeletal symptoms, and physical activity levels (to be measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire). Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis will be performed to analyze the data and identify factors affecting sleep quality. Fixed fixes for potential confounders and modifiers. The study aims to identify specific components of the sleep environment related to sleep disorders. The findings of this study will contribute to the understanding of how pillow and mattress factors, along with other variables, affect sleep quality in office workers. The results may provide information for interventions aimed at improving sleep habits, optimizing the sleep environment, and improving overall well-being in this population. As a result, promoting good sleep health among office workers can have positive effects on productivity, safety and overall quality of life.

Physical Function of Older Citizens During Municipality-based Rehabilitation

AgingRehabilitation10 more

When choosing outcomes to assess rehabilitation's effect or progress, it is essential to consider the constructs being measured and their value to the patient and the psychometric properties. Choosing an outcome that reflects all aspects of International Classification levels of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) is challenging, especially in heterogeneous groups. However, it is important to know the psychometric properties as this gives important knowledge on how to interpret results and, consequently, how this can inform the patient's care. The Short Musculoskeletal Function Assessment (SMFA) questionnaire can reflect differences in patients' functional status with a broad range of disorders, like for elderly citizens undergoing municipality-based rehabilitation. Nevertheless, since there is no golden standard to measure rehabilitation outcomes, construct validity needs to be established to investigate how scores of SMFA can be related to measures on all levels of ICF. Therefore, this study has three main objectives: To investigate how scores of the SMFA questionnaire are related to measures on different ICF levels To describe the characteristics of older citizens starting municipality-based rehabilitation on all ICF levels To investigate predictor variables of upper- and lower extremity strength

Health Complaints in Adolescence and Future Persistent Musculoskeletal Pain

Musculoskeletal Pain

Persistent musculoskeletal (MSK) pain in adolescence is associated with disability, absence from school and reduced quality of life. We know little about risk factors and underlying mechanisms of persistent MSK pain in this age group. For example, the effect of other health complaints on the development of persistent MSK pain is scarcely investigated. In this prospective cohort study, data from the Fit Futures study on Norwegian adolescents (15-19 years old) will be used to investigate whether health complaints and an accumulation of health complaints in adolescence are associated with the incidence of persistent MSK pain two years later.
