Strategies for Musculoskeletal Symptoms Relieving and Ergonomy in Operating Room
Musculoskeletal PainSurgeryIt is well known that surgery requires not only a mental diligence, but also a real physical stress due to the need to assume particular postures for many hours or to repeat specific maneuvers several times. To this peculiar condition of surgical specialities over the years has been added the development of a series of instruments and technologies ranging from the use of loopes, to laparoscopic and robotic surgery. From the studies reported in the literature, between 74% and 87% of surgeons report symptoms related to their work with consequent effects on the quality of life (sleep loss, inability to carry out their recreational activities, etc.). Similarly, a lack of knowledge of the principles of ergonomics to be applied during the performance of one's surgical activity emerged, which could improve musculoskeletal symptoms with a positive effect on the quality of life of surgeons and consequently hoping for an improvement in professional performance.
The Esbjerg Cohort - A Cross-sectional Study About Work Ability and Musculoskeletal Pain in 55 to...
Work AbilityOccupational Health2 moreThe overall aim of this study is to investigate how work with physical demands affects the physical capacity, work ability, labor market affiliation, pain and self-reported health in the oldest group of workers. Following research questions are to be answered: How high physical work demands affects muscle strength in 55-70-year-old workers and how obesity in combination with high physical work exposure influences muscle strength, work ability, cardiac function, and self-reported health? Which parameters are important for work ability and how does the exposure of high physical workload affect the work ability over time in 55-70-year-old workers? By exploring the underlying mechanism of pain among 55+ year old workers, how is pain associated with work ability, BMI and physical capacity?
SPRINT: Signature for Pain Recovery IN Teens
PainChronic3 moreTo identify biological and phenotypic prognostic markers of recovery vs. persistence of pain and functional disability in adolescents with chronic musculoskeletal pain.
Development of Pain Related Avoidance of Movement Questionnaire
Musculoskeletal PainLow Back Pain1 moreIn recent studies, it has been shown that people may have avoidance of movement due to pain. However, there is no scale that evaluates avoidance of movement due to pain in musculoskeletal problems. The aim of this study is to develop a scale to measure how much pain-related movement and activity is avoided in individuals with musculoskeletal pain, and to examine the results of its clinical application.
Characterization of Long Covid Pain in Primary Care
Long COVIDChronic Pain1 moreJustification: among the sequelae of Covid-19 in clinical practice we frequently find persistent neuromusculoskeletal pain. Prevalence data and the underlying mechanisms of such pain are very limited in the scientific literature. Therefore, with this research we will try to answer these questions. Main objective: to determine and characterize persistent musculoskeletal pain in Covid-19 patients. Method: two phases. First, a descriptive cross-sectional study will be carried out to estimate the prevalence of Long Covid Pain (LCP). Second phase, a case-control study will be carried out using the sample obtained in the first phase as the population. The sample will be divided into two groups: post-Covid-19 patients with LCP and post-Covid-19 patients without persistent pain (control group). The two groups will be matched according to sex, age and level of severity of the pathology. An assessment and comparison between groups will be made of the following variables: central sensitization, healthy physical condition and blood test values, which will be evaluated by means of physical examination, questionnaires and laboratory tests. Applicability of the results: this is a pioneering project at the national level, which would determine more reliably the prevalence of LCP in postcovid and could be a first step in the search for the best therapeutic strategies for these patients. This would help to improve the quality of life of these patients and to better manage the social and healthcare resources used in their treatment.
Knowledge Beliefs and Expectations of Chronic Musculoskeletal Patients About Their Physiotherapy...
Chronic Musculoskeletal PainThe purpose of this study is to investigate the knowledge, beliefs and expectations of patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain about their physiotherapy program and the relationship that they built with physiotherapists.
Turkish Version of the Worry About Pain Questionnaire
PainChronic1 morePain is one of the main complaints that causes people to apply to health institutions. Pain is seen as a passive warning signal of an underlying disease process; When it becomes chronic, it is considered a disease on its own. Pain that persists longer than the expected recovery time is defined as chronic pain. Pain is associated with a number of psychological, physical, and social factors. Clinical observations report that various psychological problems, especially anxiety, and depression, accompany chronic pain, and the long-term persistence of pain significantly impacts a patient's quality of life. Chronic musculoskeletal pain causes fatigue, sleep disruption, and activity and participation restrictions. Therefore, evaluation of pain originating from the musculoskeletal system and factors that cause and increase pain need to be addressed from a biopsychosocial perspective. Chronic pain is an ideal environment for anxiety to develop. If the person's chronic pain cannot be resolved, anxiety increases and the anxiety becomes excessive, the person may lose the ability to distinguish what is dangerous from what is not, as he cannot evaluate pain-related cues properly. Anxiety and depression scales are often used to assess the long-term psychosocial consequences of chronic musculoskeletal pain. However, these scales are inadequate to explain the relationship between pain and anxiety. The Worry About Pain Questionnaire is a self-report scale of 15 items specifically developed to assess pain-related pressure. To our knowledge, there is no standard, valid, and reliable Turkish questionnaire in the literature that evaluates the pain-related concerns of individuals with musculoskeletal pain and takes into account the cultural differences of Turkish patients. For this reason, our study aims to translate and culturally adapt the Worry About Pain Questionnaire into Turkish in individuals with chronic musculoskeletal pain and to examine the psychometric properties of the Turkish Worry About Pain Questionnaire.
Impact of Vitamin C on Pain Relief After an Emergency Department Visit for Acute Musculoskeletal...
PainAcuteRecent evidence has shown that vitamin C has some analgesic properties and can therefore reduce opioids used during healing. Vitamin C analgesic effect has been explored mostly during the short-term postoperative context or in disease specific chronic pain prevention but not after acute musculoskeletal injuries, which are often seen in the emergency department (ED). The study's primary aim is to compare the total morphine 5 mg equivalent pills consumed during a two-week follow-up between patients receiving vitamin C or a placebo after ED discharge for an acute musculoskeletal pain complaint. The investigators will conduct a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial with 464 participants distributed in two arms, one group receiving 1 000 mg of vitamin C twice a day for 14 days and another one receiving a placebo. Participants will be ≥18 years of age, treated in ED for acute musculoskeletal pain present for less than 2 weeks, and discharged with an opioid prescription for home pain management. Total morphine 5 mg equivalent pills consumed during the two-week follow-up will be assessed via an electronic (or paper) diary. In addition, patients will report their daily pain intensity, pain relief, side effects, and other types of pain medication or other non-pharmacological approach (ice, heat, immobilization, etc.) used. Three months after the injury, participants will also be contacted to evaluate chronic pain development. The investigators hypothesized that vitamin C, compared to a placebo, will reduce opioid consumption during a 14-day follow-up for ED discharged patients treated for acute pain.
Transformative Learning to Virtual Inter-Professional Education in Musculoskeletal Pain
Musculoskeletal PainMusculoskeletal (MSK) pain is amongst the leading reasons for people seeking medical attention in local primary care, accounting for 6-28% of principal diagnoses. Patient education is one of the important treatment strategies to ease pain, reduce suffering and disability. However, from our anecdotal experience, patients often report there is an inconsistency in the information being provided by healthcare professionals. This can be due to the existence of different MSK pain frameworks as the understanding of pain sciences evolves. Hence, there is a need for regular Continuous Medical Education (CME) to update and improve healthcare staff knowledge and skills on this aspect in Singapore. The conventional teaching method is typically used in SingHealth Polyclinics (SHP) CME sessions. It focuses on lecture-based instruction as the teaching centre, emphasizing the delivery of syllabus and concept. The conventional teaching method has been shown to be less effective than other teaching strategies (e.g. Case based learning) in practical application and critical thinking abilities. Mezirow proposed the use of Transformative Learning to enhance adult learning. We aim to conduct an RCT to investigate whether this teaching method is superior to the conventional teaching method in improving MSK pain knowledge, management advice, attitudes and beliefs of healthcare professionals in primary care. This randomised multi-centre, prospective study will be conducted across all SHP polyclinics. Healthcare professionals working in SHP will be invited to participate in the study. Participants in both the intervention and control groups will be asked to complete the questionnaires at 3 time-points: before and after the lecture, as well as 1 month later. The anonymised data collected will then be analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics.
Sustainable UNiversity Life (SUN) Study
Mental Health IssueMusculoskeletal PainIn 2017, Socialstyrelsen reported that mental ill-health in young adults had increased by almost 70% in the previous10 years. A 2014 report showed that 5% of men and 11% of women 18-24 years were diagnosed with depression or anxiety in Stockholm County. Furthermore, 41% of women 21-24 years have self reported psychological distress. Regarding pain, 28% of men and 36% of women 16-24 years have disabling neck pain. Little is known about the etiology and prognosis of poor mental health in university students. The aim is to advance knowledge about the etiology of depression, anxiety, stress and pain in undergraduate university students. The investigators will study a cohort of students at full-year programs at universities in the Stockholm area. Primary research questions are whether modifiable factors such as sleep quality, lifestyle, screen time and work environment are independent risk factors for incident episodes or unfavorable trajectories of depression, anxiety and pain in men and women? To be able to answer these research questions we designed a prospective cohort study targeting 5000 university students.
