Chronic Fatigue Following Acute Epstein-Barr Virus Infection in Adolescents
Fatigue SyndromeChronic1 moreChronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is characterized by unexplained, disabling and long lasting fatigue, as well as pain, impaired memory, sleep difficulties and other symptoms. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection might precipitate CFS. In this study, 200 adolescents undergoing acute EBV infection will be followed prospectively, and also compared with a group of healthy controls. The aim is twofold: To identify factors that predispose to chronic fatigue among adolescents with acute EBV infection To compare pathophysiological features of patients with acute EBV infection with a group of healthy controls. Possible risk factors for chronic fatigue 6 months after EBV-infection includes: Severity of the initial infection Immune responses characteristics Characteristics of the neuroendocrine stress response Cognitive functioning Emotional disturbances Genetics/ epigenetics of candidate genes Certain personality traits Critical life events
Exercise-related Post-exertional Malaise
Chronic Fatigue SyndromeThis pilot study is intended to identify sex differences in myalgic encephalomyelitis/ chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) during recovery from brief but high effort exercise tests. It is expected that women with ME/CFS as compared to males with ME/CFS will show slower recovery from exercise with respect to heart rate and blood pressure, physical functioning, and symptom severity. Also females with ME/CFS as compared to males with ME/CFS will show greater negative impacts on heart rate, blood pressure, physical functioning and symptom severity after the two exercise tests. The findings will have implications for sex differences in the pathophysiology of post-exertional malaise and activity/exercise self-management recommendations, given the expected detrimental effects of the brief intense exercise tests on patients with ME/CFS.
Autoimmunity in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS)
Myalgic EncephalomyelitisChronic Fatigue SyndromeThis study investigates whether there is an immune response directed against gut microbes or food and parts of the body in severe Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) patients.
Long-term Sequelae of COVID-19 (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis): An International Cross-Sectional Study...
Myalgic EncephalomyelitisThe term recovery from COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 is unverified because the infection leaves many symptoms due to permanent effects on multiple organs; The primary objective of this research is to understand acute and chronic long COVID symptoms by asking questions detecting patient's experience especially symptoms lasting for several months which is known as chronic fatigue syndrome(Myalgic encephalitis). The study focuses on symptoms describing Myalgic encephalitis which may still affect COVID patients for several months after the infection along with making a big picture about rare symptoms that may the patient experienced during or after the infection. A secondary objective of this research is to focus on the long-term sequelae effects and comorbidities following COVID-19 vaccination.
Genetics of Fibromyalgia
FibromyalgiaIrritable Bowel Syndrome2 moreThe Fibromyalgia Family Study identifies and collects blood samples from families with two or more members affected with Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS). The primary goal of the study is to identify genes that predispose people to FMS and/or symptoms related to FMS; identifying these genes may lead to a better understanding of the disease and more effective treatments.
Ampligen in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Chronic Fatigue SyndromeThis is an open label study of Ampligen in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.
A Non-Interventional Pilot Study to Explore the Role of Gut Flora in ME/CFS
Myalgic EncephalomyelitisChronic Fatigue SyndromeThis study seeks to correlate microbiome sequencing data with information provided by patients and their medical records regarding Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS).
ME/CFS: Activity Patterns and Autonomic Dysfunction
Chronic Fatigue SyndromeThe purpose of this study is to identify daily activity patterns, negative life events and autonomic abnormalities that may be related to non-improvement in myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). For both naturalistic studies and behavioral intervention trials, roughly 50% of patients report worsening or unchanged illness. The proposed four year study would be the first to look at the relation between illness non-improvement, patient activities at home and autonomic function. Our long-range goal is to identify physiological signals and activity patterns that predict non-improvement and relapse and develop a self-management program that prescribes improvement-linked behaviors and discourages non-improvement activities.
