RATIONALE: Gathering information about how often methemoglobinemia occurs in young patients receiving dapsone for hematologic cancer or aplastic anemia may help doctors learn more about the disease and plan the best treatment. PURPOSE: This research study is looking at methemoglobinemia in young patients with hematologic cancer or aplastic anemia treated with dapsone.

RATIONALE: Collecting and storing samples of blood and bone marrow from patients with cancer to study in the laboratory may help doctors learn more about diagnosing cancer and how well patients will respond to treatment. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to collect and store blood and bone marrow samples from patients with hematologic cancer to be tested in the laboratory.

Myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative Disease represent conditions with increased risk for pulmonary hypertension. However, the exact prevalence of pulmonary hypertension in these conditions is not known. The effects of pulmonary hypertension on the clinical picture and the symptoms of patients in these conditions needs also further exploration. This exploratory study is designed to describe the prevalence of pulmonary hypertension in the population with such hematologic diseases, and the stages of pulmonary hypertension as well its effect on exercise capacity at time of diagnosis.

This is a dose and schedule finding study of AMG 531 designed to assess the activity of AMG 531 to reduce the rate of clinically significant bleeding and blood transfusions in subjects with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) receiving lenalidomide. Subjects with MDS that are planned to receive at least four cycles of lenalidomide for treatment of their disease are appropriate to screen for this study. All subjects meeting the eligibility criteria will receive lenalidomide 10 mg capsule by mouth daily every day of each 28-day cycle. Subjects will receive AMG 531 or placebo once a week by subcutaneous injection for 16 weeks.

RATIONALE: Studying biopsy, bone marrow, and blood samples from patients with cytopenia that did not respond to treatment may help doctors learn more about the disease and plan the best treatment. PURPOSE: This laboratory study is assessing immune function in young patients with cytopenia that did not respond to treatment.

RATIONALE: Questionnaires that measure quality-of-life may improve the health care team's ability to plan supportive care for patients undergoing donor bone marrow transplantation. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying quality of life in patients who are undergoing donor bone marrow transplantation.

RATIONALE: Studying quality of life in cancer survivors may help determine the long-term effects of hematologic cancer and may help improve the quality of life for future cancer survivors. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying the quality of life of adult cancer survivors who have undergone a previous bone marrow or peripheral stem cell transplant for a childhood hematologic cancer.

RATIONALE: Diagnostic procedures may improve the ability to detect residual disease. PURPOSE: Clinical trial to detect the presence of residual disease in children who are receiving therapy for acute myeloid leukemia or myelodysplastic syndrome.

A comparison of treated vs untreated patients with MDS with a sample size of approximately 8000 patients in 11 countries.

This pilot research trial studies the antibody response to high-dose seasonal influenza vaccination in patients with myeloid malignancy receiving chemotherapy and healthy volunteers. Evaluating antibody response to high-dose seasonal influenza vaccine may serve as a basis for vaccine recommendations in patients with myeloid malignancies and provide insights into the status of the immune system in these patients.
