Wavefront-guided LASIK for Correction of Myopia
MyopiaLaser in situ keratomileusis is a successful procedure for the treatment of low to moderate myopia. Advances over the last decade have allowed LASIK to also correct higher order wavefront aberrations. In low myopia, there seem to be a minor effect of such wavefront-guided treatment. However, it remains to be established whether there is a beneficial effect in higher degrees of myopia. The study aims to determine whether myopic subjects (-6 to -10 diopters) with higher-than-average preoperative higher-order aberrations have benefit of wavefront-guided treatment. Subjects are randomized to wavefront-guided treatment in one eye, and conventional treatment in the other.

High MyopiaTo evaluate and compare the effect of the prophylactic use of two different exposure times of mitomycin C (MMC) 0.02% to inhibit haze formation after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) for high myopia (> -7.0 D). Methods: Forty six eyes of twenty three patients, 8 men and 15 women, with high myopia were included in this prospective study. Mean age at the time of PRK plus MMC was 31.7 years. Before PRK, the mean spherical equivalent was -8.50 D (range, -7.25 to -10.50 D). In each patient, one eye was randomly assigned to PRK and a single intraoperative topical application of mitomycin C 0.02% for 15 seconds (Group 1) and the fellow eye, for 30 seconds (Group 2).The inclusion criteria were high myopia, no central corneal opacity and inadequate corneal thickness to allow a safe Laser in situ keratomileusis procedure. CHAMPS Eye Study - Myopia and Retinal Vascular Geometry in Relation to Physical Activity

The consequences are now already present in childhood with an increased prevalence of overweight, obesity, and diabetes. Inactivity is also accompanied by cardiovascular iseases and is also thought to be associated with an increased incidence of nearsightedness (myopia). Myopia is the most frequent eye disease globally, and causes severe personal and societal expenses and may additionally lead to secondary eye disorders such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and cataract. The retina is the only place in the human body where it is possible to directly inspect the blood vessels (microvasculature). Photography of the eye background allows a noninvasive examination of the retinal structure in which it is possible to make measurements on the retinal blood vessels. It is well known that early vascular chances can be detected with this method and that there are correlation between these changes and systemic diseases, such as hypertension, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. This study is a new subproject in The Childhood Health, Activity, and Motor Performance School (CHAMPS) Study Denmark, also known as the Svendborg Project. The project has a well-defined cohort with originally 1515 school students who since 2007 have been divided into two groups: schools with extra exercise during school hours and matched traditional schools. CHAMPS-DK aims to investigate the effect of increased physical activity on current and future health of children and adolescents. Thanks to this unique child cohort it is possible to investigate the correlation between physical activity, myopia and retinal vascular diameters in a large group of Danish schoolchildren. We want to study the degree and reversibility of physical activity and its effect on the development of myopia and retinal blood vessel changes. However, there is still a lack of knowledge about the correlation between physical activity and retinal vascular diameters in children. Furthermore, it is still unclear whether physical activity can prevent the development of myopia; such a realization could have far-reaching consequences in form of a modified approach to the necessity for exercise and, furthermore, potentially a significant socio-economic benefit.
Research With Retinal Cells Derived From Stem Cells for Myopic Macular Degeneration
Myopic Macular DegenerationPathologic myopia is a major cause of legal blindness worldwide. In myopic macular degeneration (MMD), there is degeneration of the retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) layer, and associated photoreceptors, resulting in vision loss. There is currently no standard treatment for MMD. Transplantation of intact sheets of RPE and suspensions of isolated individual RPE cells as well as autologous translocation of RPE cells has been attempted as treatment for AMD. Human photoreceptors are comprised of two cell types-rods and cones. Both have a close relationship with the outermost retinal cells, the retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE). The RPE is located between the choroid and the photoreceptors. The RPE maintains photoreceptor function by recycling photopigments,delivering, metabolizing and storing vitamin A, phagocytosing rod photoreceptor outer segments, transporting iron and small molecules between retina and choroid, maintaining Bruch's membrane and absorbing stray light to allow better image resolution. In essence, the RPE layer is critical to the function and health of photoreceptors and the retina as a whole. Human PRE (hRPE) transplantation may be a viable option for treatment of degenerative diseases of the retina. MA09-hRPE cells are fully differentiated human RPE cells derived from embryonic stem cells. Transplanted hRPE cells prepared by Advanced Cell Technology have been studied in rodent models of macular degenerative disease. The data suggests that the subretinal injection of ACT's hRPE cell products rescues, or at least delays, loss of visual function in two animal models of retinal degenerative diseases. The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and tolerability of MA09-hRPE cellular therapy in patients with Myopic Macular Degeneration (MMD). Another objective is to evaluate potential efficacy endpoints to be used in future studies of RPE cellular therapy.
The Efficacy and Safety of Periocular Acupoint Stimulation on Myopia Progression in Children
MyopiaMyopia is widely one of the three commonly detected refractive errors. Myopia is usually managed by correction through glasses or contact lenses. Other alternative available include surgery, drugs and acupuncture. There are various therapeutic approaches and different points can be used in acupuncture treatment for myopia, such as auricular acupuncture, acupressure body acupuncture. However, the mechanism of acupuncture therapy for myopia is largely unknown. Furthermore, little information exists regarding the effects and safety of acupuncture for degenerative myopia in children. The investigators aimed to assess the overall effectiveness, safety of periocular acupressure for children with myopia The hypotheses of this study are as follows: Periocular acupressure is effective for myopia progression delay. The study aims to include 56 participants.
The Relationship Between Structure and Visual Function in Myopia Foveoschisis
High MyopiaMacular foveoschisis (MF) is a common complication of pathological myopia, which is characterized by choroid-retinal degeneration and vision impairment. Although pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) is the primary method for MF treatment, there is still a large proportion of recurrent MF due to the extremely long global axial length and posterior staphyloma. Macular buckling (MB) surgery aims at counteracting the traction exerted by the posterior staphyloma, and has been proven an effective method for treating MF. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is widely used for the structural analysis of MF. Multifocol electroretinogram (mfERG) is an objective examination for visual evaluation. To our knowledge, there is a lack of data on the comprehensive visual function evaluations of MF patients associated with OCT findings. Our clinical trial aims to provide the structural and functional relationship in MF patients undergoing MB surgery, and find out potential factors to determine the visual prognosis.
