Diagnostic Accuracy of Dermal Thickness in Lymphedema

Lymphedema of Upper ArmBreast Cancer

Ultrasound is an easily feasible noninvasive technique which is widely used in rehabilitation settings. Measurement of dermal thickness via ultrasound can be less time consuming than volume measurements with water displacement and circumference measurements. Measurement of subcutaneous tissue thickness were used for both assessment and treatment outcome. Recently reliability of ultrasound examination of thickness of the skin and subcutaneous tissue were studied by Han et al. However, diagnostic accuracy of this method has not been studied before. Early identification of breast cancer related lymphedema to start treatment earlier is critical. Consequently, reliability and diagnostic accuracy of the assessment techniques of lymphedema is crucial to evaluate both severity at the time of diagnosis, and later effectiveness of treatment. The aim of this study was to establish diagnostic accuracy of between side differences of ultrasonographic dermal thickness measurements in breast cancer related arm lymphedema.

Exercise in Improving Health and Quality of Life in Breast Cancer Survivors

Invasive Breast Carcinoma

This randomized pilot trial studies how well exercise works in improving health and quality of life in breast cancer survivors. Participating in an exercise program to maintain physical activity may help to improve health and quality of life in breast cancer survivors.

Study of the Influence of Ductal Carcinoma in Situ on the Outcome of Invasive Breast Cancer

Outcome of Breast Cancer

A prospective observational longitudinal study of 464 patients was performed between 2010 and 2015. Patients with invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) and ductal carcinoma in situ associated to invasive ductal carcinoma (DCIS +IDC) were included and analyzed.

Support Program for Adoption of Cancer Screening Interventions at a Rural Community-Based Organization...

Breast CarcinomaCervical Carcinoma2 more

This pilot trial study uses a structural support program for adoption of cancer screening interventions at a rural community-based organization. Rural communities face unique barriers in implementation of evidence-based interventions due to a lack of infrastructure, community capacity, and expertise as academic and research centers are often clustered in urban areas. The support program may help a rural community-based organization select, adapt, and implement cancer prevention and control evidence-based interventions.

Nail Changes Associated With Chemotherapy and Prevention of Nail Pigmentation by Ice Water Immersion...

Breast Cancer

Anthracyclines combined with cyclophosphamide or taxane-containing regimens may cause nail pigmentation which reduces quality of life in breast cancer patients. We conducted this study to investigate nail pigmentation and other skin changes associated with these drugs and aim to evaluate the effect of ice water immersion of hands on nail pigmentation. The first phase is an observational study. Breast cancer patients who received anthracyclines combined with cyclophosphamide or taxane-containing regimens for adjuvant/neoadjuvant chemotherapy are enrolled. The second phase is a prospective phase II study. Early breast cancer patients who plan to receive these drugs for adjuvant/neoadjuvant chemotherapy are treated with ice water immersion of the left hands while their right hands serve as control. The primary end point is the degree of nail pigmentation. The other end points are the incidence of nail pigmentation in both hands, the degree and the incidence of onycholysis, the time from the first chemotherapy to the occurrence of nail pigmentation/onycholysis, the recovery of nail pigmentation/onycholysis, and patient comfort.

Breast Cancer Recurrence Risk Counseling

Breast Cancer Female

The number of breast cancer survivors is growing. Women with a personal history of breast cancer worry about their risk of getting cancer again. The current study will develop counseling about breast cancer recurrence risk and will also get an estimate of the preliminary impact of this counseling. The goal is to enable women to make better decisions about their treatment.

Monitoring Response to NAC and Prediction of pCR in Breast Cancer Patients Using Optical Imaging...

Breast Cancer FemaleChemotherapy Effect

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) is the first line treatment for locally advanced breast cancer (BC). Besides making breast conserving surgery feasible, its main aim is to achieve a pathological complete response (pCR). Previous studies demonstrated that a pCR correlated with a higher disease-free survival. Tumor response may vary among different BC subtypes and only 30% of BC respond completely to NAC. Treating chemo-resistant disease with NAC may cause patient harm due to drug toxicity and surgery delay. It is therefore very important to promptly identify those women who will not benefit from NAC. Mammography and ultrasound proved ineffective in monitoring changes in lesion size due to therapy-induced fibrosis. MRI is the most accurate imaging technique for assessing early clinical response by measuring tumor size, however its accuracy is lower post NAC. This necessitates the need for a new technique able to non invasively assess the effectiveness of NAC. Optical techniques are sensitive to the biological changes that occur within the tumor after NAC administration. These changes occur prior to tumor size reduction. Optically estimated total hemoglobin concentration correlates with the histological analysis of vasculature as well as with tumor-associated angiogenesis which can affect tumor changes during NAC. Other promising biomarkers related to tissue composition (water, lipid, collagen content) and structure (scattering) may also be evaluated by optical techniques. The aim of the study is to monitor the effectiveness of NAC in BC patients with a near infrared spectroscopic imaging platform which allows to non-invasively detect changes in vascularization and size of BC and to characterize the presence of temporal changes in regional concentrations of relevant biomarkers (oxy- and deoxyhemoglobin, water, lipid and collagen concentration, scattering) within tissue during NAC. This optical imaging technique will provide a non-invasive, safe and relatively inexpensive tool to monitor patients' response to NAC and to predict their outcome.

18F-FDG Uptake Heterogeneity Predicts Pyrotinib Response

HER2-positive Breast Cancer

Heterogeneity of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake is a promising marker for predicting response to treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the ability of pretreatment positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) 18F-FDG-based heterogeneity to predict the response to pyrotinib in patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive metastatic breast cancer (MBC).
