It is not yet known if a program to quit smoking is more effective with or without bupropion. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to determine the effectiveness of a program to quit smoking with or without bupropion in treating patients who have undergone surgery for stage I or stage II non-small cell lung cancer.

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells. Interferon alfa may interfere with the growth of cancer cells. Combining chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and interferon alfa may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of cisplatin plus interferon alfa followed by surgery and interferon alfa plus radiation therapy in treating patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma.

Randomized phase III trial to determine the effectiveness of carboxyamidotriazole in treating patients who have stage III or stage IV non-small cell lung cancer. Chemotherapeutic agents are modestly effective for the treatment of advanced lung cancer, with rapid tumor relapse and growth even after initial response to therapy. It is not yet known whether carboxyamidotriazole is more effective than no further treatment after standard chemotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer.
