Despite recent advances in the treatment of patients with resected NSCLC, disease recurrence and mortality related to lung cancer are common among patients with early stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Therefore novel approaches are necessary to improve the outcome for early stage NSCLC. The preclinical studies conducted with vaccine based approaches provide the rationale to evaluate this as an adjunct to surgery for patients with early stage NSCLC. Administration of the vaccine before surgery will also allow for the evaluation of the tumor specimen for immunological responses to the vaccine.

Patients with confirmed advanced NSCLC and any response to 3-6 cycles of chemotherapy, were randomized to receive PCI (30 Gy/10fr) or no PCI. The primary endpoint was the cumulative incidence of symptomatic brain metastases (BM) . The study was sized to detect a hazard ratio of 0.37 with 80% power and 2-sided 5% significance (60 events, 206 patients).

Non Small Cell Lung Cancer

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common type of lung cancer, accounting for 80%-85% of lung cancers cases of which 60% are non-squamous (NSQ). This study will evaluate the prevalence of mesenchymal epithelial transition (MET) overexpression (OE) in adult participants with advanced or metastatic NSQ NSCLC. Archived tissue biopsies will be tested for MET OE and data from approximately 500 participants will be collected. No participants will be enrolled in this study. Participants' charts will be reviewed. No drug will be administered as a part of this study. The duration of the study will be approximately 15 months. There is no additional burden for participants in this trial.

Participation in medical trials usually favors a particular demographic group. But there is limited research available to explain what trial attributes affect the completion of these specific demographic groups. This trial will admit a wide range of data on the clinical trial experience of lung cancer patients to determine which factors prevail in limiting a patient's ability to join or finish a trial. It will also try to analyze data from the perspective of different demographic groups to check for recurring trends which might yield insights for the sake of future lung cancer patients.

The BIRD biobank aims at collecting clinical and biological data from patients suffering from a chronic respiratory disease. The lung cancer subpopulation will be divided into two cohorts to identify biomarkers of cancer. One cohort will include patients with supra-centimetric lung nodule(s) whether surveillance, bronchoscopic or radio-guided biopsy or surgery is indicated, patients suspected of lung cancers requiring diagnostic and/or therapeutic bronchial endoscopy and patients with a known early stage lung cancer (early-stage cohort). The second cohort will include known advanced stage lung cancers (III-IV).

Non Small Cell Lung Cancer

Early non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), treated by surgery or radiotherapy in the case of inoperability, relapses in almost 50% of cases. Circulating tumour cells (CTCs), which can be detected before surgery, represent a promising prognostic tool, but the markers characterising their aggressiveness remain to be determined. The NSCLC microenvironment, in which purinergic signalling is a key pathway, controls tumour development. Adenosine derived from the action of CD39 and CD73 ectonucleotidases hydrolysing extracellular ATP, induces immunosuppression of NSCLC by activating A2R receptors. The expression and prognostic relevance of A2R, CD39 and CD73 on CTCs is unknown. The objectives are to (i) compare the expression of A2R and CD39 and CD73 on primary tumour cells and CTCs of patients operated on for early NSCLC, (ii) correlate these data with molecular characteristics and clinical response, (iii) determine on lung cancer lines whether irradiation impacts on the expression of A2R, CD39 and CD73. This work could contribute to the identification of new theranostic biomarkers.
