Oncoxin® and Quality of Life in Cancer Patients

It is expected that additional support with certain micronutrients may improve prognosis, decrease the frequency of side effects and complications and maintain high relative dose intensity of anticancer treatments. Food supplement ONCOXIN (ONCX) contains amino acids, vitamins, minerals and biologically active substances of natural origin with high immunostimulatory and antioxidant activity. Present study is a real world experience study intended to evaluate the efficacy of ONCX in cancer patients.

Real-time Activity Monitoring to Prevent Admissions During RadioTherapy

This study will aim to demonstrate that implementation of a rapid, multidisciplinary supportive care program for patients receiving chemoradiotherapy who are deemed to be at high risk for hospitalization based on real-time pedometer data will reduce the rate of hospitalization during chemoradiotherapy or within four weeks of radiotherapy completion.

Therapeutic Yoga and Resistance Exercise for Lung Cancer

Lung Cancer

The purpose of the study is to determine the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a combined therapeutic yoga and resistance exercise intervention for individuals with lung cancer and their caregivers. The investigators aim is to help reduce the fear of exercise by tailoring the program to meet the specific needs of the survivor with lung cancer. The investigators want to see whether individuals with lung cancer and their caregivers are interested in participating in this type of program, and if they are able to attend the intervention sessions and complete the program. The investigators also plan to study the preliminary effects of therapeutic yoga and resistance exercise on fitness outcomes for both individuals with lung cancer and their caregivers.

Lung cancer suffers from large racial and socioeconomic disparities. Yet those at the highest risk of lung cancer death - current smokers, blacks, and individuals with low socioeconomic status (SES) and negative social determinants of health (SDH) - are less likely to receive preventive health services, including the two most effective interventions to reduce lung cancer mortality: tobacco dependence treatment and lung cancer screening (LCS) with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT). At Boston Medical Center (BMC) these preventive services are grossly underutilized, in part due to barriers our patients face in accessing these outpatient programs. Innovative approaches are needed to guide high-risk smokers to post-discharge early lung cancer detection services. The overarching goal of this study is to reduce disparities in lung cancer morbidity and mortality by using hospitalization at an urban safety net hospital as an opportunity to connect high-risk smokers to both LDCT lung cancer screening and tobacco dependence treatment. In addition to inpatient shared decision making [SDM] by an NP using a decision aid, screen-eligible smokers will also be connected with a community health worker (CHW) to facilitate access to outpatient smoking cessation counseling and LCS (CHW navigation).

Aerobic Exercise and Tai-chi Interventions for Improving Survival in Lung Cancer Patients

This proposed study aims to examine the effect of classical aerobic exercise or tai-chi on 1-year survival rate of lung cancer patients compared to usual care, as a primary outcome of this study. To understand the hypothesized outcomes of improved survival of lung cancer patients through physical exercise or tai-chi practice intervention, we will examine the changes in some subjective psychosocial outcomes and objective biomarkers that may be associated with the survival of cancer patients, as the secondary outcome of this study. Those biomarkers will be in following aspects: 1.) circadian rhythm, 2.) cardio-respiratory fitness, and 3.) immune functions. Secondary outcome measures include: quality of life, psychological distress, quality of sleep, fatigue, level of physical activity, circadian rhythms, cardio-respiratory fitness, physical functioning tests and immune function. The pilot study aims to assess the feasibility and acceptability of the trial so that the main study will have a higher chance of success.

Feasibility of a Hybrid Delivery of Home-based Cluster Set Resistance Training in Lung Cancer

Non Small Cell Lung CancerResistance Exercise

Symptom burden remains a critical concern for individuals with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) following the completion of treatment. Of those, symptom clusters such as dyspnea (shortness of breath) and fatigue, contribute to physical decline, reductions in quality of life, and a higher risk of comorbidities and mortality. It has been proposed that dyspnea is a primary limiter of exercise capacity in individuals with lung cancer, resulting in exercise avoidance and an accelerated physical decline. As such, specifically designing resistance exercise programs with cluster sets, to mitigate feelings of dyspnea and fatigue may result in improved exercise tolerance, resulting in the maintenance of physical function and quality of life. The purpose of this project is to investigate the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a hybrid-delivery of home-based cluster-set resistance exercise in individuals with NSCLC. Methods: Individuals with NSCLC (n=15), within 12-months of completion of treatment will be recruited to participate in this single arm feasibility trial. Participants will complete 8-weeks of home-based resistance training (RT) designed to target dyspnea and fatigue. The hybrid-delivery of the program will include supervised sessions in the participants home, and virtual supervision via video conferencing. The primary outcome of feasibility will be measured via recruitment rates, retention, acceptability and intervention fidelity. Exploratory outcomes (dyspnea, fatigue, quality of life, physical function and body composition) will be assessed pre- and post- intervention.

This pilot clinical trial studies a video-assisted intervention in improving recovery of patients undergoing surgery to remove lung cancer or cancer that has spread to the lung and their caregivers. The intervention uses educational videos to prepare patients and families for surgery and teach them how to manage the symptoms after surgery. Teaching patients and their families what to expect before and after surgery may help improve patient and caregiver quality of life, help patients recover better from surgery, and support families in their role as caregivers after surgery.
