Prostate CancerRATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug may kill more tumor cells. Biological therapies use different ways to stimulate the immune system and stop cancer cells from growing. It is not yet known which treatment regimen is more effective in treating metastatic prostate cancer. PURPOSE: Randomized phase II trial to compare the effectiveness of combination chemotherapy with that of chemotherapy plus biological therapy in treating patients who have progressive or metastatic prostate cancer that has not responded to hormone therapy.

Androgen Suppression Plus Radiation Therapy in Treating Patients With Prostate Cancer
Prostate CancerRATIONALE: Androgens can cause the growth of prostate cancer cells. Drugs, such as leuprolide, goserelin, flutamide, or bicalutamide, may stop the adrenal glands from making androgens. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells. Giving these drugs together with radiation therapy may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well androgen suppression with either leuprolide or goserelin and either flutamide or bicalutamide together with radiation therapy works in treating patients with prostate cancer.

Exemestane With or Without Bicalutamide in Treating Patients With Stage IV Prostate Cancer
Prostate CancerRATIONALE: Androgens can stimulate the growth of prostate cancer cells. Hormone therapy using exemestane plus bicalutamide may fight prostate cancer by reducing the production of androgens. It is not yet known if exemestane is more effective with or without bicalutamide in treating prostate cancer. PURPOSE: Randomized phase II trial to study the effectiveness of exemestane with or without bicalutamide in treating patients who have stage IV prostate cancer that has been previously treated with hormone therapy or surgery.
