RATIONALE: Everolimus and vatalanib may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth and by blocking blood flow to the tumor. Giving everolimus together with vatalanib may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This phase I trial is studying the side effects and best dose of everolimus and vatalanib in treating patients with advanced solid tumors.

This study assessed the efficacy and safety of Avastin in combination with docetaxel and cisplatin as first-line treatment of patients with metastatic or locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer. Patients received Avastin 15 mg/kg intravenously (IV), docetaxel 75 mg/m^2, and cisplatin 75 mg/m^2 on Day 1 of each 3-week cycle for a maximum of 6 cycles.

Vorinostat may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth. Sorafenib tosylate may stop the growth of solid tumors by blocking blood flow to the tumor. Giving vorinostat together with sorafenib tosylate may kill more tumor cells.

Based on the preclinical observation and the confirmed clinical synergistic anti-tumor activity of combined capecitabine and erlotinib in gemzar refractory advanced pancreatic cancer (APC), the investigators previously conducted a phase II study of erlotinib in combination with capecitabine against NSCLC.
