To study the effects of ZD1839 combined with either cisplatin or radiotherapy on signal transduction pathway gene expression in tumor cells in patients with local-regional recurrent squamous cell cancer of the head and neck using micro array analysis from tumor samples taken at the time of relapse and during treatment.
Randomized Study of Beet Root in Locally Advanced Squamous Cell Cancer of the Head and Neck
MucositisThe objective of the current proposal is to determine if concentrated beet root could improve medical treatment compliance as defined by completion of radiotherapy and 3 cycles of chemoradiation without dose reduction, preserve fat-free mass, and strength while reducing mucositis. The investigators central hypothesis is that dietary nitrate supplementation in head and neck cancer patients receiving aggressive medical care will improve compliance with medical treatment by attenuating the loss of muscle mass and strength and reducing symptoms (mucositis) associated with treatment compared to patients receiving standard care with placebo.

CancerEsophagus Squamous Cell Carcinoma3 moreThis is prospective research study which will include patients with recurrent or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, esophagus and anal canal starting on first-line platinum based chemotherapy or any line of immunotherapy treatment.This study aims to characterize the dynamic changes in genomic, epigenetic, immune profiling and imaging data during treatment with systemic therapy. Patients will have archived tumor samples requested as well as blood samples collected at up to four time points to analyze these changes. Imaging data will be derived from patients' routine CT scans before and after treatment.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Head and NeckA window of opportunity study which would allow brief treatment of HPV negative SCCHN with a CDK4/6 inhibitor, in the pre-operative setting, with biomarker analyses of pre and post treatment tissue. Given that the standard treatment for this population is surgical resection, this would not impact or alter standard therapy for this population. The goal will be to learn more about the alterations in pRB1 levels, as well as other signaling markers, in order to be able to eventually plan a biomarker driven treatment study.

Reirradiation has had some success, but many patients still die from their disease. Cetuximab is helpful in relapsed head and neck cancer, and it improves the effectiveness of radiation in some head and neck cancer patients. But, it has not been studied with reirradiation. The purpose of this study is to see the effects, both good and bad, of reirradiation with cetuximab.
