Brain and Central Nervous System TumorsRATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of combination chemotherapy using paclitaxel and topotecan, plus G-CSF, in treating patients with glioblastoma multiforme or anaplastic astrocytoma that is refractory or recurrent.

Cancer patients often express complaints related to cognitive impairment as an outcome of their oncological treatment. These cognitive disorders have a significant impact on the patient's and their carer's quality of life. Therefore, it appears necessary to have a reliable, quick and simple tool in order to detect cognitive impairment. The rationale of this study relies on 3 main points : The cognitive complaint frequently reported by cancer patients The difficulty in reliably demonstrating the cause of this complaint through conventional neuropsychological tests The interest of cognitive processing speed as an indicator of cognitive dysfunction The primary objective of the study is to evaluate a potential variation of cognitive processing speed at the Saint-Louis Lille Battery (SSLIB) between the beginning and during (4 months after the beginning) the oncological treatment of adults with breast cancer or colon cancer.

Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as temozolomide. work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Giving veliparib together with temozolomide may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This randomized phase I/II trial is studying the side effects and best dose of giving veliparib together with temozolomide and to see how well it works in treating patients with recurrent glioblastoma.

Giving boron neutron capture therapy followed by radiation therapy and temozolomide may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying the side effects of giving boron neutron capture therapy together with radiation therapy and temozolomide in treating patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma multiforme.

Radiation therapy uses high energy x-rays to kill tumor cells. Giving everolimus together with temozolomide and radiation therapy may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This phase I/II trial is studying the side effects and best dose of everolimus when given together with temozolomide and radiation therapy and to see how well it works in treating patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma multiforme.
