Early Intervention for Children at Risk for Anxiety

Anxiety Disorder

The aim of this study was to develop and pilot a cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) parent-child intervention for 4-7-year-old children at risk for anxiety disorders. The 20-session intervention was first piloted openly in 9 children (between 3/10/98 and 1/1/2001). The intervention was then tested in 65 children in a randomized controlled trial versus a monitoring-only wait-list control condition. Children had to either have an anxiety disorder, behavioral inhibition, or be the offspring of a parent with an anxiety disorder who had elevated symptoms of anxiety. In practice all children but one had at least one anxiety disorder at baseline. Children were blocked on presence or absence of parental anxiety disorder and randomized to the intervention or to a no-intervention wait-list control group. The intervention consisted of 6 parent-only sessions, 8-13 child-parent sessions, and a final parent session. Post-trial assessments were conducted at six months, and at one-year follow-up. The hypotheses were that the children assigned to the intervention group would show significantly better improvement (measured via Clinician Global Impression-Anxiety Improvement scale and absence of anxiety disorders) than children assigned to the wait-list condition.

Modular Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for the Treatment of Child Anxiety Disorders in Elementary...

Separation Anxiety DisorderGeneralized Anxiety Disorder1 more

Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been found to be efficacious in the treatment of child anxiety disorders, little progress has been made in the dissemination of such treatments to real-world practice settings. Clinical trials conducted in practice settings can demonstrate the degree to which evidence-based treatments are appropriate for larger scale dissemination. This study evaluates CBT as a treatment for child anxiety disorders in the elementary school clinic setting. A randomized, controlled trial design has been employed, comparing immediate treatment and a three-month waitlist. The trial is being conducted in several Los Angeles area elementary schools and is only available to children in these particular schools. To ensure that the CBT intervention is flexible and capable of matching the characteristics of various school settings, clinicians, and referred children, a modular treatment approach is employed. The study design includes elements to ensure high quality data, such as the use of independent evaluators and tests of treatment fidelity. Children, ages 5 to 12 years, are referred by teachers and staff or are identified as having high anxiety in concurrent studies. All participating children have DSM-IV diagnoses of separation anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, or social phobia, according to a semi-structured diagnostic interview. Therapy and clinical supervision is provided by the research team. It is hypothesized that children receiving immediate treatment will have significantly lower anxiety scores than children assigned to the waitlist at the posttreatment/postwaitlist assessment. If results are favorable, further exploration of dissemination of CBT into school clinic settings may be indicated.

rTMS Treatment in Patients With General Anxiety Disorder

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

This study will compare the change detected by a standardized rating scale (Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale) scores in the active treatment group as compared to sham (placebo) group after 6 weeks of rTMS treatments. It is hoped that 6 weeks of rTMS treatment will lead to improvement of core symptoms in patients with GAD.

Comparing Brief Relaxation Period to Virtual Reality Period in Reducing Dental Anxiety Prior to...

Dental Anxiety

The goal of this study is to evaluate non-drug approaches to reducing dental anxiety prior to non-surgical root canal treatment. This will be done by comparing two relaxation methods which will be performed immediately prior to scheduled, clinical non-surgical root canal treatment. Measures of anxiety will be evaluated prior to, and after, the relaxation intervention, as well as after the non-surgical root canal treatment is completed. Participation in the study is completed in a single study visit.

Meru Health Program for Cancer Patients With Depression and Anxiety

DepressionAnxiety

The primary objective of this study is to evaluate clinical outcomes among people with cancer who participate in a 12-week therapist-supported digital mental health intervention (DMHI) called the Meru Health Program (MHP). Study participants (N=20) will be referred to the MHP through the Cancer Support Community (CSC) Helpline and network of Gilda's Club locations. The main outcomes will be depression symptoms, anxiety symptoms, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), intervention adherence, and intervention satisfaction. The secondary objective will be to determine the acceptability of the screening and referral process from the CSC networks into the MHP. Data pertaining to implementability will be collected from study participants, MHP clinicians, and CSC staff.
