Effect of Bupropion on Smoking Behavior in Smokers With Schizophrenia

SchizophreniaTobacco Use Disorder

Many individuals with schizophrenia smoke cigarettes but little is known about the factors that control smoking in people with schizophrenia. The purpose of this trial is to evaluate how bupropion, an antidepressant medication, affects smoking behaviors in individuals with schizophrenia who smoke.

Using Smokeless Tobacco Products With Lower Nicotine Levels to Reduce Negative Effects of Smokeless...

Tobacco Use Disorder

Though spit tobacco is smokeless, it still affects the cardiovascular system and may be associated with heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. This study will assess the effectiveness of limiting smokeless tobacco (ST) nicotine intake in reducing levels of exposure to tobacco and associated toxicity, as well as enhancing motivation to either quit or sustain lower levels of nicotine intake.

Effectiveness of Using Tobacco Free Snuff in Reducing Negative Effects of Smokeless Tobacco Use...

Tobacco Use Disorder

Though spit tobacco is smokeless, it still affects the cardiovascular system and may be associated with heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. Long-term effects of smokeless tobacco (ST) include tooth abrasion, gum recession, mouth disease, loss of bone in the jaw, yellowing of teeth, and chronic bad breath. This study will assess the effectiveness of using tobacco free snuff in reducing levels of exposure to tobacco and associated toxicity, as well as enhancing motivation to either quit or sustain lower levels of nicotine intake.

Effect of Paroxetine on Smokers' Cardiovascular Response to Stress - 1

Tobacco Use Disorder

Smokers report that they often smoke cigarettes during stressful times. The combined effect of smoking and exposure to stress leads to exaggerated increases in blood pressure, heart rate and other measures of stress response. This combination may result in greater cardiovascular harm than either smoking or stress alone. The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of paroxetine on the response to stress after smoking.

Smokers' Health Project: Self-Determination and Maintaining Tobacco Abstinence

Tobacco Use Disorder

These two studies will examine the role of autonomous motivation in maintained adherence. The first study will determine whether smokers are still abstinent from tobacco 32 months after starting in a previous project (Smoker's Health Study). The purpose of the second study is to determine which of three treatments for tobacco dependence provides the greatest amount of protection from relapsing to smoking after quitting. Specifically, the investigators will determine if extending the length of treatment time focusing on relapse prevention and arranging for support from important others prevents relapse compared to community care. Also, the investigators will determine if providing extended treatment time and support from important others plus providing medications to those that don't want to quit prevents long term relapse compared to just extending the length of treatment time and support from others. Additionally, a sub set of the population will be randomized to using hand held palm devices to recover real-time data assessment during the last 10 months of the project.

Bupropion as an Adjunct to the Nicotine Patch Plus CBT

Tobacco Use Disorder

Existing and new pharmacotherapies along with prevention efforts are key to improving smoking cessation rates and reducing the premature morbidity and mortality associated with tobacco use. A number of individuals suffer from both nicotine dependence and depression. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of bupropion used in combination with the nicotine replacement patch and cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) in treating nicotine dependent individuals also diagnosed with depression.

The Effects of Memantine and Bupropion on Acute, Reinforcing, and Conditioned Effects of Cigarettes...

Tobacco Use Disorder

One of nicotine's effects on the body is at the level of the NMDA receptors in the brain. Memantine is a drug that also affects NMDA receptors, making it a candidate for the treatment of nicotine addiction. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of memantine using a laboratory model of tobacco addiction. The investigators will compare the effects of memantine with bupropion, medication currently used to facilitate smoking cessation.

Comparing Smoking Treatment Programs for Lighter Smokers - 1

Tobacco Use Disorder

The purpose of this study was to compare two different types of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved smoking cessation medications (nicotine patch or bupropion) used in conjunction with two levels of counseling. It was hypothesized that the higher level of counseling would have the highest rates of treatment completion and highest rates of abstinence.

Integrating Clinical Practice Guidelines for Smoking Cessation Into Mental Health Care for Veterans...

Mental HealthStress Disorders3 more

The primary study objective is to conduct a prospective, randomized controlled clinical trial that compares the effectiveness of two approaches for delivering smoking cessation treatment for veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). An approach where smoking cessation treatment is integrated into mental health care for PTSD and delivered by mental health providers (experimental condition) will be compared to specialized smoking cessation clinic referral (VA's usual standard of care). Secondary study objectives are to (a) compare the cost outcomes and cost-effectiveness of IC versus USC, (b) identify treatment process variables that explain (mediate) observed differences in smoking abstinence rates for the two study conditions, and (c) determine whether cessation from smoking is associated with worsening of symptoms of PTSD and/or depression.
