Acceptability of Less Harmful Alternatives to Cigarettes

Bladder CancerCervical Cancer9 more

RATIONALE: A study that evaluates participants' beliefs about smokeless tobacco products and nicotine replacement therapy may be useful in helping smokers stop smoking. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying the acceptability of less harmful alternatives to cigarettes.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) and Bupropion Mechanisms of Effectiveness in Smokers

Nicotine Dependence

The purpose of this study is to better characterize differences in mood, attention, brain activation patterns underlying the beneficial effects of pharmacological treatments previously demonstrated to be help individuals successfully quit tobacco smoking. Smokers will be randomly assigned to one of three treatments: 1) bupropion sustained release (SR), 2) nicotine patch, or 3) placebo patches plus pills across a 45-day period with a 3-week intensive post-treatment follow-up. In addition, 20 percent of the subjects will be randomized to a delayed-quit control group.

Lung Rehabilitation in Treating Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Who Are Undergoing...

Lung CancerPerioperative/Postoperative Complications2 more

RATIONALE: Exercise may help improve lung function and lessen complications of surgery in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who are undergoing surgery for lung cancer. It is not yet known whether lung rehabilitation is more effective than standard therapy in improving lung function in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who are undergoing surgery for lung cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized clinical trial is studying lung rehabilitation to see how well it works compared to standard therapy in treating patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who are undergoing surgery for lung cancer.

Use of Pharmacotherapy to Reduce Cue-responsiveness in Smokers

Nicotine DependenceTobacco Dependence

In this study we, the investigators at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, intend to explore whether bupropion is able to reduce smokers' responses to cigarette-related environmental cues, and craving. Previous studies have indicated that bupropion may be able to achieve these outcomes. Therefore, we predict that smokers treated with bupropion for several weeks will show reduced reactivity to cigarette cues and craving.

Brain Imaging in Tobacco Smokers During a Quit Attempt

Tobacco Use DisorderTobacco Smoking

The proposed study will help fill gaps in existing research by determining if nicotine-dependent cigarette smokers show changes in α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) availability when compared to matched historical controls using positron emission tomography (PET) imaging and the radioactive ligand [18F]-ASEM (3-(1,4-diazabicyclo[3.2.2]nonan-4-yl)-6 [18F]fluorodibenzo[b,d]thiophene 5,5-dioxide), an α7 nAChR antagonist. The study will also explore whether α7 nAChR availability influences clinically relevant measures of tobacco abstinence (e.g., withdrawal and craving, cognitive impairment), self-reported cigarettes per day, and time to relapse during an 8-day quit attempt during which smokers can receive escalating payments contingent upon providing objective evidence (breath CO and urinary cotinine) of smoking abstinence.

Switching to Potential Reduced Exposure Products in Adult Smokers

Tobacco Use DisorderOral Nicotine Pouch Use4 more

This study aims to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and the potential harm reduction of switching to potentially lower risk, oral nicotine pouches in adult smokers. Part One of this study aims to assess the interest of current smokers in switching to an e-cigarette device (i.e. JUUL) compared to alternative non-combustible tobacco products (i.e. smokeless tobacco/snus) and/or medicinal nicotine via survey. Part Two will consist of a pilot study of 30 non-treatment seeking adult smokers to investigate within-person changes in smoking behavior as a result of switching to different concentrations of oral nicotine pouch products (i.e. ZYN, 3mg and 6mg nicotine concentration). Additionally, by measuring bio-markers of tobacco exposure from baseline, this will allow the study to assess the potential for harm reduction in switching from cigarettes to oral nicotine pouches.
