Cancer promotes weight loss; it can also lead to particular complications for patients during treatment. A team led by Dr Michael Sawyer, showed the deleterious impact of undernutrition on the benefits of chemotherapy. Cancer patients are at high risk of undernutrition, which is generally more pronounced for solid tumours (upper digestive tract, ENT, bronchial tubes…). This undernutrition leads to major weight loss and wasting, and may represent the first sign of a call for a diagnosis of cancer. Cancer-related undernutrition is multi-factorial in origin and has multiple consequences; it has its own prognostic value. Chemotherapy treatments can induce various adverse effects in patients, including sensory disturbances at the beginning of treatment in addition to disturbances that may already be present before any treatment. Altered taste and odour, observed in 86% of patients, can induce a change in food preferences, promote the development of aversions, and therefore, lead to a significant reduction in the pleasure of eating. Loss of appetite, decreased food intake and the development of aversions to certain foods are situations experienced by a large proportion of patients undergoing chemotherapy. The assessment of taste disorders in patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment is established through the use of questionnaires, interviews and taste tests. Changes in the perception and identification of salty, sweet, bitter and sour flavours are common in patients undergoing chemotherapy. The objective of CANUT is to study the effect of pathology and chemotherapy on gustatory and olfactory mechanisms and in particular on interindividual differences in the perception and appreciation of food. In this study the investigators propose to adapt foods to best respond to sensory disorders related to the disease and/or treatment.

Malnutrition or its risk is common among older people, especially among those receiving home care services. It impairs the quality of life of the older people and results in significant costs to society. To maintain adequate nutrition, increased meal frequency is important. In addition to main meals, regular consumption of tasty, convenient, nutrient- and energy-dense snacks is recommended. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of dairy- and berry-based snack consumption on nutritional and functional status and quality of life among vulnerable older people at home care.

INTRODUCTION: Global protein consumption has been increasing for decades due to changes in socio-economic demographics and consumer trends towards higher protein intake, which may be related to their health benefits in performance nutrition and appetite regulation. The additional intake of protein often occurs in the form of supplements. One of the main ingredients used in sports and weight loss supplements are animal-derived proteins such as whey, which are of high quality, containing all the essential amino acids required in human nutrition with a high absorption rate. However, whey protein has a high environmental footprint, and it may contribute to insulin resistance in susceptible groups (e.g. obese, T2DM, insulin resistant, or those with sarcopenic obesity). Rice and potato protein isolates are high-quality plant proteins containing all essential amino acids comparably to whey protein. These plant-derived proteins may provide a more sustainable and accessible alternative to animal-derived proteins for appetite regulation and weight management.

The purpose of this research study is to examine the effects of overfeeding and exercise on blood levels of hormones associated with regulating appetite, also thought of as feelings of hunger and satiety (fullness). Previous studies have shown that non-obese people have different amounts of these hormones in their blood compared to obese people. The investigators hypothesize that exercise will promote improved insulin sensitivity and corresponding beneficial changes in obese individuals. The investigators predict exercise induced changes in 24-hour plasma hormone levels will be associated with improved appetite during overfeeding in obese individuals.

In the present study the investigators compared the hormonal and metabolic effects of three meal loads very popular among Italian eating habits, both in the resting- and exercising state. Given the lack of time is considered a common barrier to exercise adherence, we wanted to identify a low dose of exercise capable to produce health benefits in the post-absorptive status elicited by three commonly consumed meal-models in Mediterranean countries. To this end, healthy young volunteers firstly underwent an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and three meal tolerance tests. Secondly, in an extra set of experiments, subjects cycled at low intensity for the last 20 minutes of the same glucose/meal tolerance test. Glycemia, insulinemia, ghrelinemia, lipidemia, and satiety were measured throughout OGTT and each test-meal load.

The primary research question: In critically ill patients with nutrition 'risk factors', what is the effect of providing combined EN/PN to the group prescribed a higher dose (≥2.2 grams/kg/day) of protein/amino acid administration compared to a low group prescribed ≤1.2 gram/kg/day (EN only) on patient's functional recovery as measured by 6-minute walk distance just prior to hospital discharge? The hypothesis: Compared to a control group reflective of usual care prescribing practices and an EN only approach, the administration of a higher dose protein/amino acids using EN and PN to nutritionally high-risk critically ill patients will be associated with improved functional outcome.

In this explorative randomized clinical study, the investigators aim to study metabolic, cellular, and molecular changes that occur during weight loss in obese subjects with and without type 2 diabetes. Using novel "imiomics" (imaging technique using PET/MR bioinformatics) analyses to examine possible metabolic differences between energy restricted diet and gastric by-pass surgery on whole-body and tissue specific insulin sensitivity, glucose tolerance, metabolite and protein profiles, fatty acid metabolism, ectopic fat content, and gene expression in adipose tissue. This study aims to identify novel biomarkers and drug targets for type 2 diabetes as well as validate promising and established biomarkers in an interventional model for improved glucose metabolism.
