Evaluation of the Validity and Reliability of Muscle Ultrasound in the Detection of Undernutrition...

Undernutrition

In France, the prevalence of undernutrition in hospitalized patients varies from 30 to 50%. Undernutrition is strongly associated with a decrease in the patient's functional abilities and an increase in morbidity and mortality and healthcare expenses. In 2019, the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) published an international consensus report on diagnostic criteria for undernutrition. The diagnostic criteria are numerous, and include etiological criteria such as reduced food intake; an inflammatory setting; symptoms such as anorexia, fatigue; phenotypic criteria such as weight loss, body mass index (BMI), fat to lean mass ratio, fluid retention, and muscle function. Muscle mass is described as a major diagnostic criterion, since it is on the one hand a direct indicator of protein catabolism related to undernutrition, but also a reflection of functional impairment in the patient, as it is directly associated with functional capacities, autonomy and prognosis. Ultrasound is a reproducible method of muscle assessment. It allows the evaluation of muscle thickness or cross-sectional area of a muscle, the reduction of which, a marker of atrophy, is strongly correlated to its loss of strength and to reference measurements. In addition, ultrasound can be used to assess muscle quality, particularly by evaluating the echogenicity of the muscle. The echogenicity increases when the muscle is altered, linked to the presence of fatty infiltrate and fibrous tissue. The use of ultrasound in the evaluation of the patient's nutritional status, as a tool for assessing muscle function, is developing in the ICU and is associated with an increase in the patient's comorbidities. Studies remain limited to a few patient populations, do not report clear cut-off values to define muscle pathological status, and require more precise definition of ultrasound measurement protocols. The investigators hypothesize that muscle ultrasound is reliable and valid in the evaluation of muscle function during the screening of undernutrition in a population of patients hospitalized in diabetology-obesity, pneumology, oncology and gastro-nutrition, under 70 years old.

Women Supporting Women to Improve Infant and Child Feeding Practices

UndernutritionHealthy Nutrition7 more

Undernutrition in the first 2 years of life is the largest preventable cause of death before age 5. Among those who survive, stunting before age two leaves millions with lifelong physical and cognitive deficits, which are difficult to compensate for later in life. Pakistan is home to the second largest number of stunted children in South Asia. The primary goal of this study is to rehabilitate moderately malnourished children aged 7-23 months and enable mothers to sustain this healthy growth at home by changing their infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices, child care, hygiene and health-seeking behaviours.

Prevention of Energy Deficit Syndrome in Female Athletes. Molecular Mechanisms Associated With Malnutrition....

Female Athlete TriadEnergy Deficit Syndrome5 more

Energy Deficit Syndrome (RED-S) is the impairment of physiological functioning caused by relative energy deficiency and includes impaired metabolic rate, menstrual, endocrine, hematological, immunological, gastrointestinal, bone, psychological, developmental and cardiovascular function. Eighty-seven percent of athletes show at least one symptom related to RED-S, with a higher prevalence in women. Treatment of RED-S preferably involves a multidisciplinary team of health professionals to address the complex interaction of nutrition, training, body image and performance. The main objective is to prevent energy deficit syndrome in female athletes in the province of Alicante through different training and diet protocols using a virtual platform. A 12-week single-blind randomized clinical trial with an intervention period and a control period (RCT) is proposed. The sports federations of the most representative practices in the province of Alicante will be selected by randomized sampling. The female athletes will be randomly divided into 4 groups (control group; control group with free use of the virtual platform; intervention group with Mediterranean diet and physical exercise planning; intervention group with red fruits and physical exercise planning).

The Effects of Continuous Intake of ONS on the Nutritional Status of Taiwanese Elderly

Malnutrition Elderly

Past studies have pointed out that adequate intake of calories and protein in the elderly can deferred sarcopenia and debilitating conditions. Therefore, this study intends to use oral nutrition as a way of nutritional supplements, without affecting the subjects' normal meal intake, and supplements with snacks It is expected that there will be benefits in protein and muscle synthesis. However, the palatability of oral nutritional products will affect the effectiveness of nutritional supplements. Therefore, this test provides nutrients that are easy for the subjects to ingest with a variety of flavors, in order to achieve the test calories and protein needs. In order to investigate and compare the nutritional status, serum zinc and vitamin D status in healthy (MUST score 0) elderly and at risk of malnutrition elderly, we recruited healthy elderlies in the nursing home.

Study About Adherence and Tolerance of an Oral Nutritional Supplement (ONS) Specific for Diabetic...

DiabetesMalnutrition

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases today, it is reaching epidemic proportions, mainly caused by the increase in type 2 diabetes (DM2).The foundation of any hypoglycemic treatment is based on a healthy diet, daily physical exercise and adequate health education with the collaboration of the patient. Diet is sometimes the only necessary therapy since approximately 80% of patients with DM2 are usually overweight, what is mainly wanted with diet is to achieve normal blood glucose levels both fasting and in the postprandial phase. This diet must be a varied diet combining foods from the different food groups; however, carbohydrate control must be one of the key strategies for glycemic control. Currently, there is also talk of the concept of disease-related malnutrition (DRM). DRM is malnutrition associated with a pathological state, with the presence of inflammation being a key factor in determining its etiology. This inflammation can be chronic or acute depending on the type of pathology. Therefore, the fiber and carbohydrate composition of oral nutritional supplements are important for glycemic control, so a study is proposed to evaluate the effect of consuming a ONS hypercaloric/high-protein (HC/HP) with fiber, and enriched in calcium, Vitamin D and DHA on adherence and tolerance of the product and nutritional status in patients with DM2 and malnutrition.

Washed Microbiota Transplantation for Malnutrition After Upper Gastrointestinal Rerouting Surgery...

MalnutritionUpper Gastrointestinal Rerouting Surgery

This is a prospective, randomized, multicenter study to evaluate WMT in improving nutritional status in malnourished patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal rerouting surgery. In this multicenter trial, fifty-six patients will be enrolled in four Chinese sites. Participants will be randomized at a ratio of 1:1 to receive three WMTs through either mid-gut tube or colonic TET. After WMT, each participant will receive free diet plus 50% PEN. PEN should last for 4 weeks at home, with stool samples taken and stored at baseline, week 1, and 4 after WMT.
