Prognostic Value of Sarcopenia and Nutritional Status in Early-stage Non-small Cell Lung Cancer...

SarcopeniaNon Small Cell Lung Cancer1 more

Growing evidence has confirmed that the prognosis of lung cancer is not only related to the stage of disease, but also to the physiological and psychological situation of the patients. Malignant tumors are often associated with weakness and cachexia, leading to less physical activities and worse moods. However, few studies that have attempted to investigate the impact of nutritional status on the prognosis of NSCLC. Existing applications of nutritional scoring systems in early-stage of NSCLC are very limited. Therefore, this study aims to observe the correlation between nutritional status and the prognosis of patients with early-stage NSCLC, to clarify the value in predicting the overall survival rate and progression-free survival rate of NSCLC patients, and to offer evidence for alleviating the social and economic burden of NSCLC.

Oral Nutritional Supplement for the Patient With or at Risk of Malnutrition

Malnutrition

In case of acute and chronic illness nutritional problems are widespread, and a reduced dietary intake in combination with effects of catabolic disease rapidly lead to malnutrition. A high prevalence of protein energy malnutrition in patients has been reported. A close relation between malnutrition and re-admission rate, cost of hospital care in terms of length of stay in hospital as well as mortality has been documented. A Cochrane review of the use of oral nutritional supplementation suggested that oral nutrition not only provided nutrients, but also has significant improvements on psychological and social functions, possibly through enhancing sensation of taste and flavor which is an important mediator of pleasure and well-being. Therefore, an oral option of nutrition is always considered as the first choice of nutritional intervention, in particular in situations where nutritional interventions, such as assisted feeding, are difficult, time-consuming and demanding due to advanced morbidity and slow responses. In this randomized controlled trial, the investigators will explore the gaps of nutritional needs and the potential use of nutrition supplementation in the management of malnutrition among patients in Hong Kong. The investigators aim to improve the nutrient intakes and the nutritional status of participants through a specially formulated oral nutrition supplement titled "Fresubin® Powder Fibre" to reverse malnutrition status due to acute and chronic illness. Fresubin® Powder Fibre is a nutritionally complete powder product to be reconstituted in different caloric densities (1.0 to 1.5 kcal/ml) and containing high quality protein and vitamin D for the dietary management of participants with or at the risk of malnutrition.

Nutritional Support in Patients With Nutritional Risk. How we Can Improved the Prognosis and Quality...

MalnutritionQuality of Life

Background: Many malnourished hospital patients remain after discharge. We aimed to enhance the meal experience after discharge by delivering meals together with physical support at the home and tested if this increased food intake affected survival and quality of life. Patients and Methods: 60 discharged patients suffering from nutritional (MUST>2) and financial frailty were included. Control group (C) took their regular nutrition at home for 6 months and study group (S) received a daily dinner tray sponsored by the municipality. Hazalla philanthropic organization encouraged the patients at lunch for 6 months. Body composition (Quadstat 4000, Bodystat, UK), energy requirements (Fitmate- COSMED, Italy) were measured at recruitement. Primary outcome was 180 days survival. In addition, in the recruitment stage and after a period of 3 and 6 months, depression and anxiety questionnaire (HADS), quality of Life Questionnaire-SF36and FIM questionnaire - designed to examine the level of independence of patients with disability were performed at days 0, 90 and 180. Statistical analysis used T- Test and ANOVA Repeated Measures. The study was approved by local IRB.

Emollient Therapy for Severe Acute Malnutrition

Child MalnutritionMalnutrition in Children1 more

The investigators hypothesize that the absorption of topically applied EFA-containing emollient (SSO) into the skin and thence into the bloodstream in children with SAM will improve skin barrier function and accelerate weight gain and clinical rehabilitation beyond that possible through normal standard-of-care

Early Child Development and Nutrition in Guatemala

Undernutrition

Over 200 million children under the age of 5 years in low and middle-income countries do not reach their developmental potential, largely due to lack of adequate nutrients and lack of psychosocial stimulation. Stunting (length-for-age < -2 z-scores) is an indication of chronic undernutrition. Guatemala has the high rates of stunting in the Western Hemisphere (over 40%). This trial examines the effect of providing a micronutrient powder manufactured in Guatemala vs. placebo and an early learning environment vs. no early learning environment on the growth, health, and development of young children in Guatemala.
